Mexican Cartels Expanding Influence into the United States, Former FBI Officials Warn
Recent incidents involving organized criminal activities by Mexican cartels in the United States have raised concerns among former FBI officials who are warning about the dangers associated with an unchecked southern border. These criminal groups, traditionally known for controlling their side of the border, have now expanded their operations into American territory, leading to a surge in criminal activities and posing a threat to national security.
Former FBI assistant director, Chris Swecker, who has spent a decade investigating cartels, highlighted the growing control these criminal organizations have gained on both sides of the border. Swecker emphasized that the cartels are no longer solely focused on drug trafficking but have diversified their activities to include extortion and smuggling people across the border.
The open borders, coupled with the influx of people from countries like Venezuela and Chile, have provided the cartels with new opportunities to expand their criminal networks. Swecker, along with other former FBI officials, warned Congress about the dangers posed by these criminal groups and called for increased vigilance and security measures.
The Chinese criminal organizations were also mentioned, as they are known for their highly organized facilitation of illegal border crossings. The involvement of illegal aliens and existing connections within the country further complicates the situation, with organized gangs operating in major cities such as Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, Maryland, New York, and Boston.
The consequences of this expansion have been significant, leading to a surge in crime rates and increased drug trafficking. Swecker drew parallels to the Mariel Boatlift in 1980, when criminals were released from Cuban prisons and caused increased crime rates in the United States for decades to come. He emphasized that the influx of individuals associated with cartels and engaging in various criminal activities has further exacerbated the problem.
One notable concern is the rise in the availability of opioids, particularly fentanyl, which has resulted in numerous fatalities. Additionally, heroin and cocaine continue to flow across the border, further highlighting the power and influence cartels now possess.
Critics argue that these developments are a direct result of the policies implemented by the Biden administration, claiming that the open borders have essentially become a 'jobs program' for drug dealers and traffickers. Former FBI officials warn that the consequences of these policies will be felt for decades to come, as the cartels continue to grow and expand their criminal enterprises.
As investigations continue into these incidents, authorities are working diligently to unravel the intricate connections between these criminal groups and individuals already present in the country. However, it is clear that urgent action is needed to address the growing influence and power of Mexican cartels operating within the United States.
