Motor traffic will be banned from two streets near a primary school during pick-up and drop-off times. Carmarthenshire council said the scheme will start next Monday (February 6) outside Maes Y Morfa Primary Community School in Llanelli.
The 'School Street' project will see vehicles prohibited from Olive Street and Bowen Terrace during school opening and closing times — Monday to Friday, between 8.30am to 9.10am and 2.40pm to 3.20pm, during school term times only. Residents of restricted streets will have an exemption.
The ban will be enforced by permanent cameras using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) at each entry point of the zone. A council spokesman said: "The School Street will improve road safety in the vicinity of the school, encourage walking and cycling to and from the school, and improve the local environment for those attending the school and for local residents."
The initiative at the school, which has around 239 pupils, is funded by a Welsh Government grant aimed at making south Llanelli's roads safer. Councillor Edward Thomas, transport cabinet member, said: "The new School Street will result in a safer, healthier and more pleasant environment for everyone attending the school and for local residents, and will encourage more active travel to and from school."
