A 33-year-old man has been charged with 12 offences after multiple vehicles were allegedly deliberately rammed as they drove south along the Hume Highway on Saturday afternoon.
Police were alerted after receiving reports that a stolen silver Toyota Camry sedan was being driven erratically southbound on the highway in the Southern Highlands.
One of the vehicles hit was a coach carrying a number of passengers.
Officers with the NSW Hume Police District responded as more reports came in, with the Camry allegedly deliberately colliding with two vehicles in separate incidents on the Hume Highway between Alpine and Berrima.
About 6.30pm police were called to Sutton Forest following reports of a two-vehicle crash where it was reported the Camry had collided with a Tesla.
Police were told the driver of Tesla - a 40-year-old man - and his passengers - a 46-year-old woman and two girls aged 11 and 12 - were allegedly assaulted by the driver of the sedan before he left the scene.
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called and treated the driver and passengers of the Tesla for facial injuries before they were taken to Bowral Hospital for further treatment.
Around 10 minutes later, police responded to another incident where the sedan had crashed with a fifth vehicle on the Hume Highway, near Paddys River, and the vehicle came to a stop.
An off-duty officer stopped at the scene and began a foot pursuit, with the offender allegedly assaulting the officer several times.
The offender was finally arrested and taken to Southern Highlands police station before being taken to Campbelltown Hospital under police guard.
He was later charged with 12 offences including common assault, destroy or damage property, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, aggravated assault with intent to rob, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, negligent driving, refused breath test, refuse breath analysis and assault police officer in execution of duty causing actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail and will appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Monday.
