Carrie Johnson's influence over Boris Johnson as she's fined over Partygate

Carrie Johnson, the wife of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is to be fined as part of the Met Police's investigation into the Partygate scandal, alongside her husband and the chancellor, Rishi Sunak.

She is to be fined for attending a party in Downing Street during lockdown.

A spokesperson for Mrs Johnson said: "In the interests of transparency, Mrs Johnson can confirm she has been notified that she will receive a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).

"She has not yet received any further details about the nature of the FPN."

Mrs Johnson has been linked with two events during the lockdown period: the so-called "victory party" when Dominic Cummings resigned on November 13 2020, and Prime Minister's 56th birthday party in Downing Street's Cabinet Room on June 19, 2020.

Carrie Johnson, the former head of communications for the Conservative Party, has cut a controversial figure during her husband's time in the top job.

In recent months she has come under fire from ex-officials, while a book written by Lord Ashcroft claimed she has influence over the PM's decision-making.

In a statement through her spokesperson on February 6, she said she "plays no role in Government", instead claiming she was the victim of "enemies" of the Prime Minister in a "brutal briefing campaign".

Her position has come under increased scrutiny during the Partygate scandal, which has seen the UK's faith and trust in its leader pushed to the limit through accusations of rule-breaking at the peak of the pandemic.

Carrie's face became familiar to many through images of Johnson's election night looking anxious and surrounded by bottles of Budweiser.

The Partygate revelations first surfaced during Sue Gray's investigation into the suspected rule-breaking, with The Telegraph reporting that Mrs Johnson had allegedly spoken with a member of staff in preparation for the PM's 56th birthday and confirmed she would bring the cake.

Born Carrie Symonds, she married Boris in May 2021 with the pair having welcomed their first child together, Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson, in April 2020. Their daughter Romy Iris Charlotte was born in December 2021.

Who are Carrie Johnson's parents?

Carrie is the daughter of Matthew Symonds, a British journalist and one of the co-founders of The Independent. Her mother, Josephine McAfee, is a lawyer who also worked for the paper.

Attending Warwick University she studied art history, before seeking out a career in politics after graduation.

What jobs has Carrie Johnson had?

Carrie became a press officer for the Conservative Party in 2009. In a tweet in 2016 she shared that the role was working for Zac Goldsmith, saying that she owed much of her career to him.

She said: "My first job in politics was working for @ZacGoldsmith & not sure I'd have worked for the Tories if it hadn't been for him. Owe him a lot."

From here she went on to work on Johnson's victorious bid to be re-elected as Mayor of London.

After some other roles in the party, she ended up working under Sajid Javid during his time at the Department for Communities and Local Government before becoming the Conservative Party's head of communications.

She left to work in environmentalism in 2018.

After leaving politics she joined Oceana, an organisation working in the defence of sea life before switching over to the conservation group Aspinal Foundation in 2021, taking up the role of head of communications.

The BBC reports that many papers have credited her with convincing Johnson to oppose fox hunting. In a tweet she said she first got into environmentalism during an "internship at IFAW, many moons ago, that first got me hooked on all things animal welfare and wanting to do my bit".
