Carrie Johnson 'offered to bring cake to Boris' birthday party', Sue Gray inquiry told

Carrie Johnson ‘offered to bring cake to Boris ’ birthday party’ the Sue Gray inquiry has been told.

Mrs Johnson reportedly sent messages to staff inside Downing Street where she offered to bring a cake to the PM’s birthday party during the first lockdown, the Telegraph have reported.

The paper disclosed that officials working on the report into ‘partygate’ have been looking into conversations held between Mrs Johnson and at least one other senior member of staff that took place ahead of the gathering in June 2020.

It is reported that she asked the official to make sure staff got together to celebrate the PM’s 56th birthday and that she confirmed she would personally organise the cake.

According to the Telegraph, allies of Mrs Johnson from inside No.10 have counter-claimed that a No.10 official was responsible for the party and not her.

However, this was rejected by multiple insiders who told the paper that Mrs Johnson organised it.

This disclosure would undermine previous denials from Downing Street that Mrs Johnson organised the gathering, which was reportedly attended to by up to 30 people.

It would also mean that Mrs Johnson could now be asked to give evidence to Sue Gray and her team, or the Metropolitan Police who are now investigating eight of the 17 gatherings which took place between May 2020 and April 2021.

According to ITV News, this gathering was held in the Cabinet Room on June 19, 2020 and even attended by the Johnsons’ interior designer, Lulu Lytle.

She claimed she was only present to talk to Mr Johnson about the refurbishments she was carrying out at the couple's flat above Number 11.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: "We do not comment on any individual who may or may not be spoken to during the course of any investigation."

The Cabinet Office refused to comment and said they would not "speculate" about the investigation being carried out by Sue Gray.
