Caroline Crouch smothered to death as baby slept beside her

A Liverpool-born woman was found dead in her bed next to her 11-month-old baby girl, after being suffocated as she slept.

Caroline Crouch was reported to have moved to Greece when she was eight, and was raised on the island of Alonnisos by her British father, David Crouch, and Filipina mother, Susan Dela Cuesta.

Police officers found the mum-of-one dead on May 11, 2021.

Her puppy was found hanged nearby.

Caroline's husband, 33-year-old Babis Anagnostopoulos, initially claimed she was killed by a gang of foreign burglars who broke into their home.

But after a lengthy investigation, police said his story did not add up.

The prosecutors' report also questions the timeline of events, suggesting Caroline's smartwatch shows she was in a state of physical distress for several minutes before her heart stopped beating.

Anagnostopoulos removed a memory card from a CCTV camera in the living room of his home, and mobile phone data showed him moving between floors at a time when he claimed he was tied up.

Later, he reportedly told police he killed Caroline in a fit of rage after eight hours of questioning.

Officers said Anagnostopoulos, an airline pilot, admitted to smothering Ms Crouch and killing the family's pet dog, and tying himself up before calling for help, the Mirror reports.

It is expected that he will claim the killing was not premeditated and allege his wife had been "verbally and physically aggressive towards him", resulting in him being in a "blurred" state of mind.

A coroner's report suggested Caroline was attacked while she was sleeping, and found there was a sharp increase in her heart rate before she died.

Thanassis Haramanis, the family’s lawyer, told the Guardian he expected the trial to take place "sometime between May and September” this year.

Caroline's heartbroken parents won custody of their granddaughter, now 20 months old, in June 2021.

Caroline first met Anagnostopoulos, who is 12 years her senior, when she was a child as he has ties to the island and was visiting family at the time.

They began dating when she was in her teens and got married in Portugal in 2019, with their daughter born in June 2020.

A documentary that tells all about Caroline Crouch will air on Channel 5 at 9pm this evening (Thursday).
