Carol Vorderman says she never wants to marry again but enjoys the company of 'special friends'

Carol Vorderman told This Morning viewers that she feels "free" since deciding never to get married again, and talked candidly about "special friends" that she sees regularly. The 61-year-old was talking with Gyles Brandreth, Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond during a segment about dating advice.

Without revealing their identities, the former Countdown presenter revealed she has been dating two men for several years and that one of her close male friends is an astronaut.

When one caller said that he felt younger than his age, Carol said: "I live my life in chapters, and I have been in this chapter since I was about 50. So for the last decade or so, I've lived a life which is much freer. I've never felt freer. So I have ignored the looking for one person and I have a number of what I've called 'special friends'."

She continued: "I don't really want to marry again. I don't really want to live with a man again. Have to look after him all the time. But this is a time to break this nonsense taboo, which is a person should only be looking for one other person that satisfies everything in their life. That's hell."

Talking about the relationship with her 'special friends', she said: "They don't know each other, but they know about it. It's a very honest relationship."

Carol was first married in 1985, at the age 24, to Royal Navy officer Christopher Mather, but the marriage lasted only 12 months. Her second marriage was to management consultant Patrick King in 1990, when she was 30, and the couple had two children, Katie and Cameron. They separated in 2000, and she went on to have a relationship with sports journalist Des Kelly, but they separated in 2006.

The TV star has spoken in the past about how she chooses not to have a serious relationship in her 60s as it gives her time for her outdoor pursuits and camping trips.
