Carol Vorderman floored by Gyles Brandreth's 'Boxing Day bonk' This Morning story

TV presenter Carol Vorderman was left scandalised by Gyles Brandreth on ITV's This Morning. Following a discussion of why there are so many babies born in September, the former politician shocked the sofa after regaling them with a raunchy story from his grandfather.

Hosted by Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond, the group discussed data released on Thursday, January 19, which revealed more babies were born on September 27 than any other date of the year. More babies are born in September than any other month of the year - and Gyles thought he knew why.

The Mirror reports one reason for this is due to parents wanting their children to be born at the start of the school year, so their kids are amongst the oldest. However, Gyles puts it down to the 'Boxing Day bonk'.

The other hosts were shocked by the former politician revealing that his grandad told him of the 'Boxing Day bonk' and so he wasn't at all surprised by news September is the most common birth month. Carol was left especially shocked, letting out a surprised "Gyles!"

Gyles was making reference to the idea that more couples have sex around the Christmas period than at other times in the year, making September birthdays more common for their children. Introducing the discussion, he said: "The next story is exciting, because this I know something about.

"New figures from the Office of National Statistics reveal that more babies are born on September 27 than any other date. This is not new to me," he continued.

"I've known about this for many a year. My grandfather told me about his 'Christmas treat'," Gyles said, to chuckles from his colleagues. Alison said, laughing: "Once a year?"

"Well it was!" Said Gyles. "It was known in the family as the 'Boxing Day bonk'."

Dermot and Allison were left open-mouthed at this startling revelation, while Carol exclaimed "Gyles!"

The former broadcaster quickly backtracked, saying: "Oh, sorry, I don't think I'm allowed to say that."

Dermot seemed surprised at Carol's scandalised expression as he replied: "Also, Carol, you're un-shockable."

Gyles continued: "And there were families who didn't go in for that kind of thing, and once a year they could-" and here the presenter gestured with his hands in the air before adding: "And Christmas was usually the time of year to do it because people are more relaxed."

Fans were also left laughing at the discussion.

The Mirror reports over the 20-year period the research looked at, an average of 1,993 people were born on September 27 each year - almost 50 percent more than the December 26 average of 1,345. The rest of the top five most popular dates were within a week of September 27, with September 24 (1,987), September 25 (1,980), October 1 and September 23 (both 1,979) also likely.

It is thought September birthdays are more common because some parents are keen to have their children be the oldest in their school year, although it could also be down to couples being more likely to have sex over the Christmas break.
