Carol McGiffin has insisted that ITV bosses have 'obvious contempt' for their audience after bosses were accused of referring to audiences as 'Tower Block Tracey's'.
Last week, ITV's chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall, managing director Kevin Lygo and general counsel and company secretary Kyla Mullins appeared at a government committee following the bombshell revelation that former This Morning host Phillip Schofield, had an affair with a much younger colleague.
During one particular segment of the hearing, the ITV trio were quizzed about allegations about the use of an offensive nickname used to describe their their viewers, which was 'Tower Block Tracey's.
SNP's John Nicholson claimed the term was used in staff meetings to describe its audience who wouldn't like or understand 'highbrow' content as the term insinuates that those who watch ITV daytime TV are of a 'low social class'.
In response to Nicholson's questions, a visibly shocked McCall said: "We wouldn’t describe our audience in that way and I know one thing, it is that the daytime team on every show really cares about the audience, so that surprises me."
Following the drama of the government committee, former Loose Women star Carol McGiffin has now shared her thoughts on the 'Tower Block Tracey's' scandal, as she claims that ITV have 'obvious contempt' for their audiences.
In her latest column with Best Magazine, Carol, 63, penned: "The only 'new' revelation to come out of the whole ITV bosses' pointless questioning by MP's is the obvious disdain and contempt they have for their viewers, after it was revealed they refer to them as 'Tower Block Tracey's'.
"Do they also think, I wonder, that by forcing their woke agenda down the audiences throats day after day they're 'educating' them? Of course they do."
Last month, Carol revealed that she had been forced to 'step away' from Loose Women after allegedly being asked to sign a contract which was 'totally unjust and unworkable' for her.
Carol then left fans flabbergasted when she then made a savage swipe towards the ITV programme and her fellow panelists.
During an appearance on GB News, the TV star said she no longer watches the show and claimed it’s become too 'woke' for her.
While speaking to host Dan Wootton, Carol said: "Well put it this way, reading all the comments from the article at the weekend there are a lot of people who think the programme has gone very, very woke."
Dan replied: "I feel that as a viewer. I don’t watch any more." Carol then admitted: "Well, neither do I. The whole of mainstream media is very, very woke."
"You just don’t have to keep forcing this stuff down peoples’ throats, it’s not just ITV, the BBC is probably worse actually – and saying that, Channel 4 is probably the worst out of all of them. It’s not a place where I feel I fit in," she added.
"And, even though, you should be having the debates and seeing a difference in opinion, in the typical woke ideals, you don't really get it anymore you're not allowed to say it and if you do, you either get censored or you get cancelled as many people have learnt to their cost."
She added of ITV: "They come back and say we support free speech but I can't see it, I can't really see it – from where I'm sitting anyway."
Carol then suggested: "I'm not sure whether or not that was the reason I was given the contract I was given."
In response to Carol's claims, an ITV spokesperson said: "Any theories around Covid discussed by Carol on a platform outside of ITV would be her personal opinions, have not been broadcast as part of Loose Women and do not represent the views of ITV. Here at ITV we encourage free speech, but equally are fully committed to responsible broadcasting and adhering to the OfCom code.
"ITV will not comment on speculation around individual contracts. We understand that Carol has decided to leave Loose Women and we wish her well in any future projects."
