Carnegie Mellon University receives historic $3 billion donation

  • Citadel CEO Ken Griffin donated a historic $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University , representing the largest individual donor gift ever given to a university.
  • Carnegie Mellon plans to allocate $2 billion of the gift toward constructing a new campus in Miami, Florida, which is scheduled to open in 2028.
  • To facilitate the new Miami campus, Griffin acquired 35 acres in Wynwood for $1.1 billion, marking the largest land assemblage deal in Florida history.
  • The remaining $1 billion will benefit the university's main Pittsburgh campus, with roughly half earmarked for its School of Computer Science.
  • In honor of the record-breaking donation , CMU will rename the department the Kenneth C Griffin School of Computer Science.
