Motorists have described “carnage” on the outskirts of Barry as police have closed off a main road due to an issue with a petrol station roof. The A4226 Port Road West is shut and there is congestion in the area. A part of the roof of the Texaco petrol station at the top of Pontypridd Road “has become unstable”, meaning one of the four exits is blocked off.
According to traffic monitoring service Inrix: “A4226 Port Road West Westbound closed, queueing traffic due to unsafe building from Stirling Road to B4266 Pontypridd Road. Congestion to the A4226 Port Road eastbound and the A4226 Waycock Road southbound.
“The roof of the petrol station at the roundabout has become unstable. You can’t go all the way around the roundabout past the petrol station, so coming from Whitmore school is shut and you can’t get to Pontypridd Road to go into Barry.” You can get the latest WalesOnline newsletters e-mailed to you directly for free by signing up here.

Police have asked people to avoid the area. A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “Emergency services are dealing with an incident at the petrol station on Pontypridd road Barry, on the roundabout at the top of 5 mile lane. Please avoid the area as the road is due to be closed.”
According to motorists in the area, Port Road West is blocked near the Tesco Superstore heading west towards the roundabout connecting to Pontypridd Road and Waycock Road. The road has been closed since shortly after 7am on Saturday morning, and there remains heavy congestion in the area, with one motorist referring to it as “carnage” on social media.
