Carlton couple left anxious after doorbell footage captured stranger outside front door

A couple have been left feeling anxious and concerned after their Ring doorbell recorded a strange man outside their front door in the early hours of the morning. Jonathan and Mike Severnsmith, who live in Carlton, reported the footage to police immediately on Saturday, January 15.

In the video, a man dressed in casual clothing walks up to the front door of the house before appearing to notice the camera and he walks away. He has an item in one of his hands which cannot be seen clearly on the video.

"It was the early hours of Sunday morning, my husband and I were relaxing at home watching TV. He noticed at 1am that we had a notification from our Ring app so he looked at the footage on his phone. It shows someone walking up to the door which is a bit of a surprise," Mike said.

"We didn't know the person on the footage and he didn't appear to be in any distress or anything. We noticed he had something in his hand."

Mike added: "We were originally told it was going to be treated as an attempted burglary and that someone would come out to speak to us. At this point, it was 2am and my partner was feeling quite tired so he went to bed and I waited up...

"The other concern we have is that we bought this house about a year ago. Before we bought it, there was an elderly lady living here and the security wasn't like it is now. I shudder to think what would have happened if he had tried to do this while she lived here."

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: “We received a report of an attempted burglary in Albert Avenue, Carlton, in the early hours of 15 January 2023. Footage provided by the occupant was reviewed several times and confirmed no criminality had taken place. The incident was therefore closed and the occupant informed.”
