Veteran Sky Sports commentator Ian Crocker was behind the mic to describe the action as the Celtic and Rangers women’s sides clashed in the SWPL at Airdrie’s Excelcsior Stadium on Thursday night.
But it wasn’t Kirsty Howat’s wonder winner for Malky Thomson’s Light Blues that had fans talking - instead it was an off-field observation of Crocker’s that set tongues wagging. For the Londoner revealed that men’s defender Carl Starfelt is dating one of Fran Alonso’s star’s, Jacynta Galabadaarachchi.
There have been social media relationship rumours for some time now with the pair spotted together, including at the new Top Golf venue in Glasgow. But the unusual source of confirmation coming during a live match caught supporters by surprise.
Starfelt and Australian star Jacynta suffered mixed derby fortunes with the Swede helping Ange Postecoglou’s men to a 1-0 win in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden while his “partner” went down by the same scoreline.
The 21-year-old women’s team star moved to Glasgow just over a year ago after spells at Napoli and West Ham United having starred for Melbourne City and Perth Glory in her homeland. As she got to her feet after a crunching challenge against Gers, the camera panned to Starfelt in the stand and commentator Crocker said: “And from the Celtic men’s team, Carl Starfelt is watching tonight. And there’s a reason for the that - he’s supporting his partner Jacynta.”
Fans responded immediately on social media. One said: “Ian Crocker has just officially announced Carl Starfelt and Jacynta as an item on Sky. I cannot believe it.” Another said: “Now, hold on. Carl Starfelt is dating Jacynta?”
