Caribou Biosciences, a Berkeley, California, biotech co-founded by Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna, is ending development of its off-the-shelf CAR-T therapies after it could not raise money for a late-stage lymphoma trial. The company announced in a press release on Oct. 6 that it will discontinue vispa-cel and a second therapy, CB-011, substantially reduce its workforce, and explore a merger, sale, or other deal.
STAT reported on Oct. 7 that the company is shutting down. Chief executive Rachel Haurwitz told STAT that Caribou had worked out a phase 3 design with the FDA, but raising money to pay for the study proved too difficult.
