Care firm ordered to improve as service rated 'unsafe'

A Merseyside care provider has been ordered to improve following an inspection.

Alcedo Care in St Helens provides support and personal care to children and adults in their own homes. Following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Alcedo Care was rated as "requiring improvement".

The CQC breaks down their inspection to five categories: whether the service is safe, well-led, caring, responsive, and effective. Alcedo care was handed a rating of "requires improvement" on two of these categories- safety and leadership.

The inspection, carried out in May 2022, found that records surrounding patient's medical conditions were not always handled appropriately. The report said: "Care records did not always contain the relevant information, guidance or support for staff to follow. Medical / health conditions were often recorded, however there was little or no information about the surrounding risks, management of risk or support the person may need."

As well as this, the report found that risk management measures were not always used effectively "to safely monitor, manage or improve the quality and safety of care people received."

A spokesperson for Alcedo Care said: "Further to the recent CQC inspection report at Alcedo Care Wigan and St Helens homecare service the branch was disappointed to receive the current rating which we don’t feel accurately reflects the current level of the service. We work closely with St Helens Council and have passed all quality audits completed by them.

"We have invested heavily in both electronic monitoring systems and recruitment to ensure the business is safe and we have adequate staffing. As a result of this inspection, we have obviously reviewed our systems and procedures and if necessary have implemented changes.

"We were pleased to see our staff described as caring, compassionate and responsive to clients’ needs as they are exceptional. We do disagree with some of the comments made within the report which we have communicated to the CQC and we will be seeking a re-inspection as soon as possible."
