A housing support service, which was previously pulled up by the Care Inspectorate for not using ‘safer recruitment’ practices, is making improvements, a new report says.
Ayrshire Live previously told how TLC (Scotland) Housing Support Service, in Main Street, Prestwick, employed some staff who had not been subjected to a reference check.
We also told how some staff’s references received ‘no checks at all,’ according to the scrutiny body, which they claimed put service users ‘at potential risk.’
The findings came on the back of an unannounced inspection last year.
However, a fresh inspection of the service has highlighted signs of improvement.
TLC (Scotland) is registered to provide a service to adults and people with assessed support needs living in the community.
At the time of the fresh inspection, the service covered areas across North and South Ayrshire, supporting around 205 people.
An extract from the Care Inspectorate’s latest report into TLC (Scotland) said: “This was a follow up inspection.
“During this inspection, we found that the service was following safer recruitment practices.
“Reference checks had been carried out on all newly recruited staff members. The service had started using a staff folder audit tool to ensure all necessary checks had been completed.”
As a result, the Care Inspectorate said this particular requirement had been met “within timescales.”
Another requirement was for the service to ensure that clients had “confidence” that staff supporting them were “competent and confident” in their role, that a “robust induction process” was “in place” and staff received “appropriate training.” including but not limited to, moving and assisting- prior to commencing such activity in their role.
This particular area will be reviewed during a later inspection.
The Care Inspectorate added: “At the time of inspection, the service had started working towards this. This area for improvement was not reviewed during this follow up inspection but will be reviewed at the next inspection.”
