Cardiovascular disease is the leading medical cause of duty-related deaths among firefighters, police officers, military personnel, emergency medical responders, astronauts, and pilots, and until now clinicians treating them have had no comprehensive guidance built for their circumstances.
A joint scientific statement from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association fills that gap. Titled Clinical Considerations for the Care of the Tactical Athlete With Cardiovascular Abnormalities, it introduces a framework called Tactical Clinical Management, which asks physicians to weigh not only an individual's medical risk but also the occupational demands, mission requirements, and public safety consequences that follow if that person becomes suddenly incapacitated.
