Cardinals will pick up 5th-year option on Hollywood Brown’s contract

The Arizona Cardinals made a big move during the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night, trading their first-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens for wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and a third-round pick (No. 100 overall).

He was a first-round pick in 2019, selected 25th overall. He is eligible to have a fifth-year team option exercised on his contract. The Cardinals recently picked up the fifth-year option on quarterback Kyler Murray’s contract, as he also was drafted in 2019.

The Cardinals will exercise that fifth-year option on Brown’s contract before next week’s deadline, general manager Steve Keim said after the deal was made.

Keim said acquiring Brown made sense for multiple reasons. One was “two years of controlled costs,” he said.

Brown is due a little more than $2.1 million in salary in 2022 and then the fifth-year option will pay him more than $13.4 million.

For a team looking for a young No. 2 receiver, it makes sense.

Keim does not anticipate contract issues with Brown. It would appear Brown knows his turn for a contract extension will come up next year.
