The Arizona Cardinals announced they signed eight players who were on their practice squad to “futures” deals for 2024 on Monday, following the completion of the regular season.
Many teams did the same thing.
However, the Cardinals were the only team on Monday, per the NFL transaction report, to release players from their practice squad.
There is no real need to do so because, as reporter Howard Balzer noted, practice squad contracts automatically one week after the regular season unless signed to a futures deal.
They released the following players:
- WR Dan Chisena
- RB Corey Clement
- DT Jacob Slade
- LB Davion Taylor
- DT Kendal Vickers
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday that the Cardinals released Clement with the intention of letting him try and land with a playoff-bound team.
That would make sense, especially since all but Slade have multiple years of playing in the NFL.
The one perhaps surprise is Slade, who was a rookie free agent the Cardinals signed after the draft.
We will see if any is able to land anywhere during the postseason and if they and up returning on a futures deal later.
