The Cardinals are one of two NFL teams still without a head coach, and they appear to be waiting to interview an assistant currently occupied by the Super Bowl. Arizona intends to interview Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon on Monday for its vacancy, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
While the Cardinals have been going through their hiring process, they had to wait to interview Gannon. Teams only can bring in Super Bowl assistants for second interviews during the two-week bye. So because Arizona didn’t conduct a first interview with Gannon before conference championship weekend, it must wait until Monday to do so.
It should be pretty convenient for the Cardinals to interview Gannon, as Arizona is hosting the Super Bowl on Sunday.
Gannon is in his second season as Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator and was a hot name during this coaching cycle. During the 2022 regular season, the Eagles defense allowed the fewest passing yards in the NFL (179.8 per game) and ranked second only to the 49ers in total yards allowed per game (301.5).
Arizona recently hired Monti Ossenfort as its new general manager and is looking to replace Kliff Kingsbury at head coach. Besides Gannon, Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo are the other reported finalists.
