Cardiff University has warned some students won't know their degree classification, or even whether they have achieved a degree, before planned graduation ceremonies go ahead later this month. A spokesman for the institution has also confirmed "a small number of students won't receive degrees" due to a lengthy marking and assessment boycott. The admission follows a months-long national marking strike by staff in a years long row over pay and conditions.
The announcement from Cardiff follows Swansea University saying 70 of its students due to graduate this summer won't be able to do so because work has not been marked. Both universities apologised and blamed staff joining the University College Union (UCU) marking and assessment boycott.
One Swansea University student said she felt "robbed" and there are fears that not knowing their degree results will affect job and postgraduate applications. Cardiff University apologised profusely to its students but admitted it didn't know when all work would be marked or degrees classified.
