Cardiff is finally becoming a city for cyclists - but there's plenty still to do

When I first moved back to Cardiff in 2014 I brought a bike with me. I was living in Roath and working in the city centre so it made sense to cycle. Quicker than walking, cheaper than the bus, it was a no brainer.

I went to uni in York, where everyone cycles, and while definitely not accomplished, I'd call myself a confident cyclist. I've hired bikes on various trips around the world and yet, shortly after returning to Cardiff my bike found itself wedged behind the shed, where it stayed until it rusted, and I think it was still there when we sold that house (sorry).

The reason was simple. Cardiff's roads. The designated cycle route I could use was on Newport Road, a busy double-laned road where cyclists are encouraged to share with buses. Yes, buses, those 18 tonne juggernauts, which, sorry drive, aren't renowned for their patience. The combination of that, a slip on ice and the resulting near miss meant I gave up.
