Cardiff City transfer news as Huddersfield Town look to sign forgotten man and Stack gives verdict on keeper battle

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, June 29.

Huddersfield open Murphy talks

Huddersfield Town have reportedly joined the race to sign out-of-contract Cardiff City winger Josh Murphy.

The winger was a number of players to depart following the expiration of their contract at the end of the season, having spent much of the last campaign out on loan at Preston North End.

Now, according to Football Insider, Huddersfield have joined the race to land the former Norwich City star, with the Terriers already believed to have opened negotiations over a potential deal.

Murphy joined the Bluebirds for around £11m in 2018, but was unable to prevent Cardiff's relegation from the Premier League.

In total, he made 99 appearances for City, netting 14 goals.

Stack relishing battle for number one jersey

Cardiff City's new goalkeeping coach Graham Stack admits he's already been impressed by the level of competition for the number one jersey ahead of the new season.

Rohan Luthra and Dillon Phillips have been joined by Jak Alnwick and Ryan Allsopp this summer, with all four seemingly showing signs of promise during the initial stages of the pre-season period, much to the delight of Stack, who recently left his position at Watford to take over from Andy Dibble.

"It's been brilliant," he told Cardiff City TV. "Early days but we've got a really good group. The staff have made me feel extremely welcome.

"Being on the training ground during pre-season gives you the opportunity to speak to the staff a little bit more, with a little more time on their hands. But the group's been different class. They seem like a really good bunch.

"They're really good characters. Really good goalkeepers and it looks like they're going to be fun to work with them.

"First and foremost I want to improve them as goalkeepers and I want to get them ready to go out on a Saturday and perform. That's my aim. That's what we'll be judged by as a group. Certainly as a coach.

"They're different characters. But they've got on great with each other. They drive each other. Pushing each other in training and they've been very supportive. I've been blown away at the minute by their attitude to training. They've been a joy to work with.

"The beauty of the goalkeeping department at the moment and the goalies that we've got is that I honestly believe that they believe anyone is capable of playing.

"They will know that there will be one come the weekend or come the Tuesday night but I like to think that the good characters they are, they'll support the one who's playing and they'll continue to work hard and try and force their way into the team.

"We've created competition within a small group, but it's going to be healthy competition. As I say, between us we seem to be getting on really well together. But when the team has to be selected, there's going to have to be some disappointed players. That's something they'll have to deal with and show some character to get over."

Baggies clash moved

Cardiff City's Sky Bet Championship clash with West Bromwich Albion will now be played on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at 8pm.

This game was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, but has been moved due to arrangements around the 2022 Commonwealth Games in nearby Birmingham between late July and early August.

Wilson already impressed by fitness levels

Cardiff City's new head of physical performance, Patrick Wilson, says he's been impressed by the general levels he is already seeing after just seven days.

"To be fair, if I can just reference the first week. The boys were outstanding," Wilson said from their camp in Scotland.

"We got to the backend of the week and we tested them properly and the application, the intent, the attitude they brought, to really hard, high dense, really physical training was next level.

"In between they were able to have a bit of banter, a bit of bite-back, I love that. It's a great sign of a group. It's a great sign they are starting to gel.

"One of the biggest parts is helping them reach their potential. These are phenomenal athletes, phenomenal people. They do not get to a club at a position like this without having something really, really special, and it's about try to find the best possible way to make that special shine come competition."

Wilson joins the Bluebirds after three years with Bath Rugby initially as their head of strength and conditioning before moving into the role of head of athletic performance. He says he has settled into his new position well, revealing it was too good an opportunity to turn down when he was made aware of the role with the Championship club.
