Vincent Kompany's side are currently under a transfer embargo, but the expectation is that it will be lifted soon, with promotion to the Premier League also looking increasingly likely.
A number of clubs from England, Germany and Italy are believed to be keeping tabs on Johnston, with Cardiff City among those recently credited with an interest.
However, given the level of stiff competition for his signature, the Bluebirds may well be forced to explore other options.
Rotherham latest
Cardiff City's abandoned clash with Rotherham United could yet result in a number of different outcomes amid an investigation.
The match at the New York Stadium was abandoned just a couple of minutes after half-time following a freak downpour that left visible surface water in several areas of the playing surface.
Cardiff were winning 1-0 at the time, and are believed to unhappy with how the incident was handled by the Millers, whose groundstaff also found themselves in the firing line on a shambolic afternoon in south Yorkshire.
It's understood the EFL are still in talks with both clubs over the circumstances of the decision, and will take time to review all evidence before opting for their next move.
Jenkins rues lack of quality as youngsters go down to defeat
Cardiff City under-18s boss Steve Jenkins admits his side were punished for a lack of quality in the 2-1 defeat to Crewe Alexandra at the weekend.
The young Bluebirds saw their four-match unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of the visitors at Leckwith, and Jenkins admits his team were too slow to come out the blocks on a disappointing afternoon.
“I was disappointed with the first half," he said. "Thought we looked a little passive and lacked a real energy, and that’s what we’re about as a team. We’re aggressive, we have energy, but we just lacked it today. Let’s be fair, I thought Crewe were really good, they played well and deserved to win.
“We came out in the second half and had a go, created some good chances. Trey hit the post on a couple of occasions, their keeper made a couple of good saves at some vital moments. We huffed and puffed but probably didn’t have enough quality on the day to go and get an equaliser or a winner.”
