Cardiff City transfer news as Bluebirds legend questions Gareth Bale move and Aden Flint close to Stoke City

These are your Cardiff City headlines on Saturday, June 11.

Bothroyd doubts Bale to Cardiff

Former Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd says he doubts whether Gareth Bale is suited to Championship football. The Wales skipper, 32, is a free agent after his contract with Real Madrid elapsed. The Bluebirds have been heavily tipped to sign Bale on a short-term deal this summer, with the attacker setting his sights on the World Cup later this year.

Bale revealed on Friday that he would make a decision on his future when he returns from holiday after Wales' Nations League campaign ends. But Bothroyd sees a move to the Championship as problematic, believing he would be better suited to a Premier League switch.

"I think it will be more difficult for him to play in the Champ than it would playing in the Prem," he said on talkSPORT on Friday night. "Obviously, he's great player, he's done fantastic at Real Madrid and he done fantastic at Tottenham. But I think going down to the Championship is not for him. I think it would be really difficult for him to perform and get the best out of himself.

"I can see him coming back to somewhere like Tottenham, to be honest. The last time he was here, he done fantastic. He scored goals."

"I think wherever he goes, he'll just be signing a six-month deal," he added. For the latest Cardiff transfer news, sign up for our newsletter here.

Flint closing in on Stoke

Our colleagues in Stoke report that Aden Flint will sign for the Potters. On Friday, Flint was officially released by the Bluebirds as Cardiff published their retained list of next season.

Flint had already said on social media that he would be leaving the club this summer. He wrote on Instagram: "My time at @cardiffcityfc has come to an end. First of all it’s been a privilege to play and score goals for this club. There’s been many highs and lows during my 3 years, but the memory that will last with me forever, is scoring against them lot down the m4!

"To captain the club on many occasions is a huge honour for me. I’ve met some fantastic people and made some friends for life. Finally want to say a big thank you to the bluebirds fans, your support has been amazing and wish both you and the club every success in the future."

StokeLive report Flint will become Michael O’Neill’s first signing of the summer and follows the departure of James Chester and return of Taylor Harwood-Bellis to Manchester City. The Potters look to have pipped Derby County to the deal, with the Rams also keen on the 32-year-old.

Derby join Pack race

League One club Derby County have entered the race to sign Marlon Pack.

Bristol City, Portsmouth and Shrewsbury Town were seen as the frontrunners for the midfielder, whose contract has expired at Cardiff City Stadium. Reports on the south coast now state the Rams are in the running for the former Robin.

The News state that the pull of returning to his home city is proving strong for the Buckland boy. Buy Wayne Rooney's interest in the 30-year-old could change matters. The Rams are able to offer more money to Pack, but the ongoing takeover uncertainty at Pride Park could boost Pompey's chances.

In any case, it now looks like a two-horse race for the former Bluebird.
