Cardiff City transfer headlines as Bluebirds and Millwall linked with Norwich City striker after Ikpeazu pursuit ends

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Friday, January 28.

Cardiff and Millwall want Hugill

Cardiff City and Millwall are interested in signing Jordan Hugill, according to reports.

The Bluebirds are in the market for a forward, having been keen on landing Middlesbrough's Uche Ikpeazu on loan.

However, Steve Morison confirmed that deal has fallen through because Boro only wanted the player to leave if he was sold, a means of transfer Cardiff are unwilling to entertain.

Now, according to Football Insider, Cardiff have turned their attentions to 29-year-old Hugill.

The Norwich City striker is currently on loan at West Brom, however he has struggled for regular game-time, having started just seven Championship games for The Hawthorns club.

It is said that Hugill is ready to cut his time short at the Midlands club in search of regular football elsewhere and the Bluebirds, along with Millwall, are reported to be interested in taking him for the second half of the campaign.

On Friday it was confirmed that Andy Carroll had signed for the Baggies, paving the way for Hugill's exit.

Hugill has scored one goal in 20 appearances for West Brom this term.

Cardiff missed 'massive trick' letting Rowberry leave

Cardiff City missed a "massive trick" by allowing former first-team coach James Rowberry leave to take over at Newport County, according to former Bluebirds defender and caretaker boss Danny Gabbidon.

The Exiles are currently reaping the rewards from Rowberry's Bluebirds departure, though, showcasing promotion form having won their last three games in a row and sitting third in the League Two table.

They are averaging almost two goals per game since Rowberry took charge at Rodney Parade back in October, leaving Cardiff after eight years with the club.

However Gabbidon believes that Cardiff should have turned to Rowberry after Neil Harris left the club a year ago. But Cardiff's loss has undoubtedly been Newport's gain.

"You're looking now at Cardiff City, who are trying to change their style of play, in a difficult position in the league, bringing in an inexperienced manager in Steve Morison, you're looking at that thinking, after Neil Harris left, you should have been looking at James Rowberry," Gabbidon on this week's episode of EJFOF.

"He is someone who was in the building. If you're looking to change the style of play, bring the young players through, who knows the young players. He deserves a lot of credit for those young players we are seeing in the first team now, he has had a massive part to play working with those young players from seven, eight years of age.

"He probably would have been the perfect person to put in charge after Neil Harris, but got overlooked for whatever reason.

"I don't know (why he was overlooked). Because from what I'd heard over the last couple of years, he was highly rated there within in the club and he was someone they saw as a future manager. I thought that might have been the right time to do that.

"You look what they've done now, throwing an inexperienced manager into a difficult situation, you feel for the manager a little bit. They missed a massive trick here by letting him go and we are seeing what he is doing now with Newport, they are in promotion form."

Prutton predicts Forest win

Sky Sports pundit David Prutton is backing Nottingham Forest for an away win when they visit the Welsh capital this weekend.

The Bluebirds head into the game having gone six Championship games without a victory. On the other side of the coin, Forest are coming off the backs of three wins in a row under Steve Cooper and riding the crest of a wave.

Predicting a 2-1 win for Sunday's visitors, he wrote in his Sky Sports column: "Cardiff are not having a good time of it right now under Steve Morison. They start the weekend three points above the drop zone, and are only not in it because of the sides with points deductions below.

"Nottingham Forest are riding high off the back of three straight wins and a victory in the East Midlands derby. It's hard to see them not making it four in a row here."

Bluebirds back to make 'real fight' of Liverpool clash

Liverpool legend Ian Rush has backed Cardiff to make a "real fight" of their FA Cup clash at Anfield next Sunday.

The glamour tie is fast approaching next week and the Bluebirds could certainly do with a boost amid a poor run of form.

And while former Wales striker Rush is expecint Jurgen Klopp's side to come through as victors, he believes Cardiff won't make it easy for the Premier League outfit.

Speaking to Gambling.com, Rush said: “Being Welsh, I know Cardiff City quite well and I’m looking forward to their FA Cup visit to Anfield [next] weekend.

“No doubt the away end will be sold out because the Bluebirds have fantastic support and I’m sure their team will make a real go of it.

“Cardiff haven’t been playing particularly well of late, so I do expect Liverpool to win, but then this is what the FA Cup is all about.

“It’s games like this where you tend to see players from lower tiers rise to the occasion and that’s what makes the competition special.

“The FA Cup is all about the underdog, and Cardiff are clearly the underdogs here. The expectancy is with Liverpool, even if Klopp fields the younger lads, and I think they’ll come through it, but don’t be surprised if Cardiff make a real fight of it.”

Warnock linked with Bluebirds return

Neil Warnock has been linked with a shock managerial return to Cardiff City.

The veteran manager, 73, has been out of work since he left Middlesbrough at the start of November, but has refused to rule out a return to the dugout.

And now, The Sun report that the Bluebirds, along with Severnside rivals Bristol City, are entertaining the possibility of appointing Warnock.

Cardiff sit 20th in the Championship table and have to start moving quickly if they are to get themselves away from the drop zone in the coming weeks.

A drop into League One is almost unthinkable for Cardiff, whose financial position is precarious at best with lawsuits hanging over their heads and Vincent Tan's leisure empire having taken a massive hit during the pandemic.

Steve Morison, whose short-term deal runs until the end of the season, brought an immediate lift when he was appointed manager, but Cardiff are now winless in their last six Championship matches and are currently being saved from a bottom-three spot only by virtue of Reading and Derby County's points deductions.

The report adds that Tan "looks set to make a change" in the dugout if the Bluebirds' league standing does not improve. ( You can read the full story here )
