Ng benefitting from League Two education
Perry Ng says his bruising education in League Two has given him the grounding needed to flourish for Cardiff City in the Championship.
The 26-year-old has enjoyed a strong run of form in the Bluebirds backline, playing a vast majority of his games at centre-half, despite concerns over his physical presence.
It's a test that the player himself says he's relishing, having cut his defensive teeth against a variety of brutish opponents.
"Playing in League Two helped me a lot," he said. "That’s where I gained most of my experience. I was playing against some big brutes there, so I’m used to it now.
"You have tough away days there against lads 6ft 5in who just want to fight you. It’s the best experience you can get to move up to this level."
Asked about his toughest opponents at that level, he added: "I'd say big Tom Pope at Port Vale gave me a few boots around.
"I played against Adebayo Akinfenwa a few times. That wasn't an easy one. There was a few [others]. I played with Chris Porter at Crewe. He's about 6ft five, so training with him every day got me used to it as well."
One of the most vivid memories of that time was when the defender came up against Uche Ikpeazu, who would of course later become a Bluebirds team-mate.
"When I first went into the team at Crewe, it was big Uche, who was at Cardiff last year," he added.
"He's probably the strongest player I've ever played against. So when he threw me about a few times it was a bit of a learning curve, but you soon get used to it."
Robins gives update on duo ahead of Cardiff clash
Coventry City boss Mark Robins says midfield pair Callum O’Hare and Liam Kelly are closing in on a return to first team action - but will likely miss Saturday's clash with Cardiff City.
“Liam came through 45 minutes OK and had a decent run out and training on Thursday,” Robins said. “Callum is back in full training which is a big lift for everybody."
Asked if Kelly could be in line for minutes this weekend. Robins added: “He will be available next week. He needs to do some more training. He has an injury history and I want to make sure he gets more load into him and then see how he copes with that.
“There are bits and pieces that he’s still feeling so I feel it would be foolish to include him at this stage, so he won’t be involved tomorrow but hopefully he’ll be involved some time next week, depending how he goes through the next few days.”
However, Robins was a little more non-committal on the when O'Hare might return, adding: “It depends on the programme and depends on Callum.
“You know what he’s like. He’s back, he’s fit and it’s just a question of how much load he has got to get in his legs before he can join in, not necessarily needing an Under-21s game. But he’ll need to do specific work to get himself ready for it, and I might have to use him because of the nine games we have got in four weeks before the World Cup.
“So he may have to be involved and get his fitness and game time in the games. We just have to weigh that up, but it’s something we may have to do.”
Murphy ready to kickstart Oxford career
Former Cardiff City winger Josh Murphy says he's itching to get going at new club Oxford United after seeing his opening few months with the club hampered by injury.
The winger has been limited to just three appearances for the U’s since joining on the back of his release from the capital back in July, but says he's ready to be called up on this weekend, with Oxford set to travel to Exeter City.
“My body’s in good shape, obviously the injuries haven’t helped and delayed my restart but I’m chomping at the bit and can’t wait to get going," he told the Oxford Mail.
“It’s been a long wait but I’m glad I’m fit again, and I’m just raring to go, to help get a positive performance for the team and give something for the fans to cheer about.
“There was a certain level of expectation when I came here but the injury happened.
“I’m fit now and I just want to help the team, the best that I can and change the performances."
Doyle out to impress Pep
Tommy Doyle says he still has ambitions of breaking into Pep Guardiola's plans at Man City.
The midfielder, currently on loan at Sheffield United, produced a hugely impressive stint at Cardiff City last season, and has once again impressed in the second tier.
But while he admits his ultimate dream is to play for his boyhood team, the 20-year-old insists his current focus is on helping drive the Blades' promotion ambitions.
He told YorkshireLive : "I am very young and I have got a lot to learn and a lot of these lads have played hundreds of games, which helps.
"For me I am wanting to learn, willing to learn and to try and put in as many good performances as I can. Honestly, I am really enjoying it and when we start winning again I'll be even happier.
"I have made it clear that while I am here I am a Sheffield United player and focussed here. I am wanting to learn and improve here.
"They do their checks on you and make sure you are OK, but they know the person that I am and what I am all about and they leave me to it to sort myself out, basically.
"I am a City boy and for me there is nothing better than being able to play for Man City but as I said before I am really happy to be here and it's a massive step in my career and something I am really enjoying every time I play."
