Cardiff City news as loan players nowhere to be seen and Bluebirds want Swansea City favour

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Monday, February 27.

Loan players' barren weekend

Last weekend was not a fruitful one for Cardiff City's players out on loan.

Of the seven players the Bluebirds currently have out on loan across the country, just one player played any part for their club team.

Kieron Evans, who has been in good form for non-League side Torquay United, was suspended for the game against Southend United at the weekend, following a yellow card totting-up offence.

Max Watters, meanwhile, was serving the last game of his three-match ban, which he picked up in Barnsley's win over Cambridge United last month, meaning he was also absent for the Tykes' 4-1 win over Derby County.

None of Ollie Tanner (York City), Tom Davies (Pontypridd United) nor James Crole (Torquay United) were named in the squads for their respective clubs.

Dillon Phillips appears to have lost his place between the sticks for Belgian club KV Oostende, having had a run of 12 games in goal, he has been on the bench for the last three matches.

Jack Leahy, playing for Cymru Premier side Haverfordwest County, is the only player who got minutes under his belt, playing 77 minutes in the side's 2-1 loss against Pontypridd.

Poole strike earns dramatic draw in women's derby

A 97th-minute equaliser from Phoebie Poole earned Cardiff City Women a share of the spoils in the South Wales derby against Swansea City yesterday.

Stacey John-Davis twice gave the hosts the lead, but Danielle Broadhurst and that late Poole effort ensured the Swans did not leave Llandarcy with the bragging rights.

After the draw, Bluebirds head coach Iain Darbyshire said: “We’re over the moon overall. I think it was definitely deserved. We dominated large parts of the game, but things didn’t quite go our way. We dug deep and have had a strong team spirit all year. We knew that we were going to have to fight for everything, even up until the 97th minute and we got our reward. The whole squad are buzzing.

“Football is an incredible game. You live it, you breathe it and sometimes, you lose yourself in the moment. The players deserve it, they work so hard in every training session, they deserve moments like this and we still have our seven point cushion, which we’ll take into the next game.”

Scorer of that dramatic equaliser, Poole added: “What a good day to be a Bluebird! We worked really hard towards the end of that game and we fully deserved to draw. I thought we were very dominant. Our belief and our confidence is through the roof and we take that into every game. We take one game at a time, work as hard as we can and the fact that we haven’t lost this season shows that it’s paying off.”

Under-21s in action tomorrow

Darren Purse's under-21s are back in action against Charlton Athletic tomorrow.

The young Bluebirds take on the Addicks at Leckwith, coming off the back of a 4-2 win over Millwall which saw a host of first-teamers, including Joel Bagan, Eli King, Vontae Campbell, Rubin Colwill, Isaak Davies and Mark Harris, involved.

Will Sabri Lamouchi see it fit for the players trying to muscle their way back into the senior side to get another outing ahead of the Severnside derby this weekend?

Kick-off at Leckwith is at 2pm.

Rotherham in action tonight

Cardiff's relegation rivals Rotherham United take on the Bluebirds' arch enemies Swansea City this evening.

Every team 16th and below, barring the Millers, lost at the weekend, meaning Cardiff's defeat by Norwich City was not felt too harshly.

However, Rotherham, who sit one point and one place above Cardiff, could gain ground on those above and push away from the Bluebirds and the other teams below with victory at the Swansea.com Stadium tonight.

Cardiff fans find themselves in the peculiar position of wanting their local rivals to do them a favour this evening.
