Cardiff City transfer news as West Ham kid signs and Lamouchi sends first-teamers to play in Millwall win

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Tuesday, February 21.

Duo have scans today

Cardiff City duo Callum Robinson and Callum O'Dowda were sent for scans on injuries today.

Both Callums were taken off during the 1-0 win over Reading on Friday night. O'Dowda had gone down a number of times during the game before being hauled off in the 66th minute.

Robinson, meanwhile, carried on in the final 10 minutes despite hobbling around and holding his hamstring rather worryingly.

WalesOnline has learned that the club had to wait for players' swelling to go down on their legs before sending them for scans today. They eagerly and nervously await the results.

It is understood that O'Dowda was said to be feeling better than when he sustained the injury on Friday, but the chief concern appears to be Robinson, whose problem hamstring could sideline him for weeks if negative results are returned from the scan.

In more positive news, Jaden Philogene, who also appeared to be limping during the win over the Royals, does not require a scan, meaning he is likely to be OK for the weekend clash against Norwich City.

Academy sign West Ham kid

West Ham academy product Lennon Peake has signed for Cardiff City on a short-term deal.

The 20-year-old winger has struggled with injury problems in recent years, but the Bluebirds have signed him as an academy player with the hope that he can prove his fitness before the end of the season.

West Ham cut short the player's deal so Cardiff, who are under an embargo which means they cannot pay any fees for players, could sign him on a free.

WalesOnline reported back in November that the 20-year-old was on trial with the Bluebirds. Indeed, he scored in the second minute during a trial game for the under-21s against Charlton Athletic.

The left-footed left winger has endured a hellish two years of injury torment, missing two full seasons before making a comeback at the start of this campaign.

However he struggled for minutes in West Ham's youth setup this term and has sought more regular action elsewhere.

"Lennon Peake has joined the U21 setup for the remainder of the 2022/23 season, subject to international clearance," the academy Twitter account wrote.

"The midfielder joins from West Ham United, following a successful trial. Welcome to South Wales, Lennon!"

First-teamers out in force for under-21s win

Mark Harris was one of the four scorers as Cardiff City Under-21s downed top-of-the-league Millwall at Leckwith this afternoon.

The Bluebirds fielded a side packed with first-team experience, including Vontae Campbell, Joel Bagan, Eli King, Harris, Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies.

And Harris was the first on the scoresheet as he stuck his first chance away with aplomb. He picked the ball up on the left before skinning two players, cutting inside and firing into the far corner.

The Lions then levelled through a Frankie Hvid header, but City then regained the lead after the break thanks to a 30-yard lobbed effort from Cameron Antwi.

Harris, Colwill and Davies all made way after the hour-mark, allowing substitute Owen Pritchard to rifle one into the bottom corner after some neat work from Antwi in the build-up.

Millwall closed the gap again late on thanks to a Seb Drozd goal, but City made sure of the three points when Pritchard fed Chanka Zimba in the box before the striker rounded Joe Wright in the Lions' goal and tapped home.

City remain fourth in the Professional Development League 2 table.

Brighton join Bluebirds in watching defender

Premier League outfit Brighton are among the clubs watching Motherwell prospect Max Johnston, according to The Sun.

Cardiff scout Alex Stafford was in attendance at Motherwell's clash with Hearts on Sunday to cast his eye over the right-back, who can also play in midfield.

It's claimed City are among a number of clubs to have shown an interest recently, with Championship rivals Sheffield United, Luton Town and Preston all believed to be tracking the Scotland youth international.

The 19-year-old is heading into the final four months of his deal in North Lanarkshire, and has emerged as a key player for Motherwell since returning from his loan at Cove Rangers.

And it appears if City are serious about him, then they could have to fight off a pitch from Brighton as well as many of their divisional rivals in the summer.

Norwich top-scorer ruled out of Cardiff game

Norwich's top scorer Josh Sargent has been ruled out of the game against Cardiff City this weekend.

The Bluebirds travel to Carrow Road for their next instalment of Championship action on Saturday, where they will take on mid-table Norwich.

The Canaries, however, will be without their biggest goal threat, with Sargent having netted 11 goals for the Norfolk club this season.

“Josh has an ankle injury, so unfortunately he will be out of tomorrow’s game and then the game at the weekend," manager David Wagner said yesterday ahead of the club's game against Birmingham City tonight.

"Teemu (Pukki) is a doubt for tomorrow’s game, and we’ll make a late call on him.”

If Pukki, Norwich's second-top scorer on 10, is also not fit enough for the weekend that will represent another big boost for the Bluebirds.
