Wolves explain Giles recall
Wolves loan manager Matt Jackson has suggested that the change of style under Steve Morison was a key factor in the club's decision to recall Ryan Giles.
Giles emerged as one of Cardiff's most creative players during the first half of the season, and was the shining light during an otherwise difficult start to the campaign under Mick McCarthy.
Morison took over following McCarthy's sacking last October, and has made several tweaks to the side in order to get them firing again.
It has, by and large, worked out, with Cardiff hauling themselves 13 points clear of the dropzone, easing concerns over a disastrous relegation to League One.
But the loss of Giles was nevertheless a big blow, with the wideman eventually being loaned out again to Blackburn Rovers.
And speaking to The Athletic, Jackson has since revealed that some of the changes implemented by Morison were part of their motivation for taking him away from the capital.
“They’re not sent on loan and we just bid them farewell for a few months or a season. We’re analysing everything,” he said.
“A good example is (Giles). Under Mick McCarthy, Cardiff were playing quite similarly to Wolves in a lot of different metrics and Gilo was producing quality crosses and regular assists from the left wing.
“Then by the time the manager changes and Gilo goes back to left-back, the formation changed and their style changed, which was really reflected in Gilo’s stats. It wasn’t making the most of what we wanted him there for. We don’t just want 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.”
Morison's relegation warning
Morison himself has told his Cardiff team that they still cannot afford to take their foot of the gas in their bid to steer clear of relegation.
City head into Tuesday night's clash with Derby County having suffered back-to-back defeats, and Morison has stressed the importance of getting back to winning ways as his side bid to stave off any threat of getting sucked back into the mix.
"Look how quickly we turned around with a few wins and got to where we are now," he said.
"The games are coming thick and fast, there are five more before the international break, all huge tests and we need to win some.
"You just have to be on the ball all round. We are concentrating on ourselves and this is the next one… Barnsley are on a charge, they are all going to have runs and we need another little run on the back of two defeats.
"We need to get back on the winning trail as soon as possible."
Sang gearing up for Rangers and Celtic challenge
Tom Sang admits he can't wait to take on giants Rangers this weekend.
The 22-year-old sealed a move to St Johnstone on the final day of the January window, and has so far made three appearances for the club.
His side are set to come up against Rangers at McDiarmid Park on Wednesday night, and the former Manchester United full-back admits he's relishing the opportunity to test himself against Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men, who recently enjoyed a sensational Europa League aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund.
“There is a lot of motivation behind helping St Johnstone stay up and I feel like that’s a very good task,” Sang told The Courier.
“The change is a good experience – to be in a situation like this and to try and help the team get out of it.
“But I also want to get as many games and as much experience as I can.
“I’m definitely up for the challenge and I’m really enjoying it – especially getting to play in big games against Rangers and Celtic.”
Young Bluebirds beaten in Severnside derby
Cardiff's under-23s slumped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Severnside rivals Bristol City at Leckwith on Tuesday afternoon.
Tommy Conway's first-half strike and a penalty from Nahki Wells put the Robins in control, before Jack Leahy pulled one back just after the hour.
Wells then wrapped up the win for the visitors with a coolly-taken finish late on, condemning the Bluebirds to a seventh game without a win.
