Cardiff City headlines as striker hails passionate Bluebirds fans and youngster signs new deal

Here's your round-up of all the latest Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, February 23.

Hugill wary of 'confident' Terriers

Cardiff striker Jordan Hugill says the club's passionate fans have made settling into the capital a doddle.

The 29-year-old arrived on loan from Norwich City in January and has enjoyed a strong start in a City shirt, netting twice in his last six outings.

It's a run that has coincided with an upturn in form for the Bluebirds, who take on high-flying Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night.

The striker admits he's expecting a tough assignment against the Terriers, but is in no doubt that Cardiff's visiting fans will do their bit.

He told the club's official website: "They've [Huddersfield] been brilliant. I've played them once before this season, and they were really good. They'll be riding high from the confidence of their win at the weekend against Fulham, but so are we.

"We're also riding high from the run we've had at the moment, so it will be a good game, with two in-form teams. I'm looking forward to it.

"I can't be happier with the way the fans have taken me in. It's brilliant when you hear them when we're winning and we're doing well, so I can't wait to see them."

Leahy signs new deal

Cardiff youngster Jack Leahy has signed a new deal at the club, which will keep him in the capital until the summer of 2023.

The winger arrived on a free transfer from Brighton and Hove Albion last summer, following a successful trial, and has been impressing at under-23 level.

Taking to Twitter, the 19-year-old said in reaction to the news: "Couldn’t be more happier to extend my time at this club, but we’re not finished the hard work continues."

Harris opens up on failed Reading move

Kadeem Harris has opened up on his failed move to fellow Championship side Reading last summer.

Harris was a free agent at the time after being released by Sheffield Wednesday following their relegation to League One, and was taken on trial by the Royals.

However, a move to Berkshire never materialised, with the club placed under a transfer embargo.

Harris eventually signed for Ukrainian side Metalist Kharkiv, but admits he thought a move to the Madejski was more or less in the bag.

"I was under the impression I was signing at Reading. It was all done," he told WalesOnline

"I just came in and trained because they were under an embargo but they said they could sign players in a few days.

"The situation kept dragging and dragging. But I just needed it to be over and there was talk of it dragging on until halfway through the season.

"It was a frustrating period, I actually had to turn down a couple of other Championship teams because I wanted to go to Reading. It was a club who played really good football, I had a couple of friends there, not far from home. It wasn't that far from home. I didn't even care about money, it just sat right for me and my family.

"But this embargo wasn't getting lifted and it never happened. It got to a point where I needed to move on, the season had already started, we were a game or two in.

"I just needed to play football.

"The embargo was lifted, but they basically weren't able to do it. They said the restrictions would be lightened the following week so asked me to keep coming in and I told them I couldn't. I really liked the club and the squad but I had to think about myself and my career.

"At that point, that's when all the offers from the Championship clubs had gone because they had their squads and didn't have much of a budget.

"What was I going to do? I had been at Reading three or four weeks. But I just thought then that I wanted to look abroad then and that's when this all happened."

ITV secure deal for EFL highlights

ITV are set to broadcast highlights from the EFL, Carabao Cup and Papa John's Trophy from the 2022/23 season.

The broadcaster has signed a new two-year deal with the EFL, and will show highlights in the primetime 9pm slot on Saturday on ITV4, with a repeat then screened on ITV later in the evening and on Sunday morning.

Each highlights programme will also be available on a catch-up basis on ITV Hub.

EFL Chief Executive Trevor Birch said: “With 1891 matches played across the season, it’s crucial for the EFL that the very best of our match action is widely accessible and we are delighted that ITV will show highlights of our games for the next two years.

“As an experienced major broadcaster with a comprehensive sports portfolio, ITV’s commitment to high quality coverage will showcase the breadth and depth of our competitions to football supporters all over the country.”
