Cardiff City closing in on striker breakthrough as Tottenham starlet heading for medical

Cardiff City have won the race for young Spurs striker Kion Etete.

The 20-year-old had been on the radar of a number of Championship clubs this summer after Tottenham's recent decision to sell the forward, who scored 10 goals in 25 Premier League 2 games for Spurs' under-21s side.

But Cardiff have seemingly soared to the front of the pack for the talented young forward, who is set to undergo a medical in the capital today ahead of a permanent move. The deal is understood to be worth around £500,000 plus add-ons.

The move represents a huge breakthrough for the Bluebirds, who have been keen to bolster their forward options this summer following the departure of James Collins, while loanees Jordan Hugill and Uche Ikpeazu have returned to their respective parent clubs.

That has left boss Steve Morison with Max Watters, Mark Harris and the injured Isaak Davies as his only recognised strikers this season, but the arrival of Etete will come as a substantial boost to his continued efforts to reshape the squad.

Standing tall at 6ft 4, the striker has been described as physical and mobile. He spent the first half of last season on loan with Northampton Town in League Two, before heading to League One Cheltenham Town, netting six goals across 30 league games.

He started out at Notts County, before joining Spurs in 2019.

The breakthrough comes after chairman Mehmet Dalman had recently hinted City were looking to splash out a fee on a new forward this summer, and also suggested the club are looking to bring in a second striker before the close of the window.

It's understood the club are looking to supplement the arrival of Etete with a more experienced recruit from the loan market.

When asked about Cardiff's striker search, Dalman said : "I'd like to think it will be a mixture and that's what we are looking at. One we would like to bring in as a long-term recruitment and we would like to bring in someone on loan, preferably someone who has got the experience of the league and has the ability to find his way to the goal posts."
