Trains from Cardiff to Pontypridd will be disrupted for five days, Transport for Wales has confirmed. The service will be affected all day from Sunday, March 5 to Thursday, March 9, as work continues on the construction of the new South Wales Metro.
Transport for Wales has confirmed that trains between Cardiff and Radyr (and City Line) will also be impacted all day between Monday, March 6 and Thursday, March 9. These services will instead be run using rail replacement buses.
The Metro project, which is now set to be finished in 2024, involves the electrification of the core Valley lines (from Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr and Rhymney into Cardiff), as well as the Coryton and city lines through the capital down to Cardiff Bay.

There are currently many services impacted throughout the evenings this year. The train service between Cardiff to Rhymney is disrupted for the whole of 2023, from approximately 8pm every Sunday, Monday, Tuesdays Wednesday and Thursday while the work takes place. Read more here.
Other services currently disrupted in the evenings include the Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil and City / Coryton lines from Cardiff Central. The work takes place late evening and overnight every Sunday, Monday, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursday, closing part of the network from 8pm to 5am.
There are also further all-day disruptions in place throughout March and April, with services using rail replacement buses. The services impacted throughout spring include:
- Radyr to Pontypridd on Sunday, March 19
- Pontypridd to Merthyr Tydfil on Sunday, March 19
- Pontypridd to Aberdare on Saturday, April 1
- Pontyridd to Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday, April 1
- Pontypridd to Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2
- Cardiff Central to Rhymney on Sunday, April 2
- Cardiff Central to Aberdare on Sunday, April 2
- Cardiff Central to Merthyr Tydfil on Sunday, April 2
- Cardiff Central to Radyr on Sunday, April 2
- Ystrad Mynach to Bargoed/ Rhymney on Monday, April 3 to Thursday, April 6
- Cardiff Central to Pontypridd on Saturday, April 8 and Sunday, April 9
- Pontypridd to Treherbert on Monday, April 9 to Thursday, April 13
- Ystrad Mynach to Bargoed/ Rhymney on Tuesday, April 11 to Thursday, April 13
Passengers can use their train tickets on replacement bus service, with bus stops located in the car park of Rhymney train station, the entrance of Pontypridd station, Abercynon station car park, the Merthyr Tydfil station entrance, Radyr station car park, adjacent to Ystrad Mynach station car park, outside Treherbert station, next to the leisure centre from Aberdare and the rear car park of Cardiff Central train station.
