Tottenham will play Manchester United in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. Spurs beat Premier League champions Manchester City 2-1 to reach the last eight and their reward was another home against opponents from Manchester.
United’s first game following the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday saw a 5-2 win over Leicester, with Ruud van Nistelrooy in interim charge. Spurs, who have not won a trophy since lifting the League Cup in 2008, beat United 3-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford at the end of September.
Holders Liverpool will return to the south coast after beating Brighton 3-2 on Wednesday. The 10-time winners will visit Southampton, while Newcastle’s reward for overcoming Chelsea was a home tie against Brentford.
Arsenal will entertain Crystal Palace - surprise fourth-round winners at Aston Villa - in an all-London tie. The quarter-final matches will be played in the week beginning Monday, December 15.

Ruben Amorim promises clarification on his future as Man Utd move edges closer
16:03 , Jamie BraidwoodRuben Amorim has promised to clarify his future after Sporting Lisbon’s match on Friday evening as the highly-rated head coach’s move to Manchester United edges closer.
“It is a negotiation between two clubs,” Amorim said in English at Sporting’s pre-match press conference ahead of the gaame gainst Estrela da Amadora on Friday night.
“It’s never easy. Even with the clauses it’s never easy, they have to talk.
“We will have clarification after the game. It will be very clear, so it’s one more day. After the game tomorrow, we will have the decision made.”

Arne Slot satisfied with Liverpool’s adaptability in victory against Brighton
15:33 , Jamie BraidwoodArne Slot believes Liverpool’s 3-2 Carabao Cup win at Brighton proves his team can function effectively without a recognised striker amid the club’s current injury issues.
With Diego Jota sidelined, midfielders Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai were tasked with supplementing the attacking threat of wide pair Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz at the Amex Stadium as Darwin Nunez was given a rest by beginning on the bench.
Slot, who made eight changes for the fourth-round tie, was satisfied with the experiment, but would prefer to play with a central striker as he turns his attention back to the Premier League.
“If you play those two (Jones and Szoboszlai) without a number nine, you are always a bit worried if you have enough runs in behind the last line because these two like also to play into the midfield and make combinations over there, to make triangles over there,” said Slot, whose team host Brighton in the top flight on Saturday.
“But I think what they did really well was combining, trying to become an extra midfielder, but don’t forget to make the deep runs as well.
“It helped that Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo were a constant threat in behind also, so in general I liked what I saw.”
Timo Werner wants more confidence after ending his goal drought
15:03 , Jamie BraidwoodTimo Werner aims to be more confident in front of goal after he scored for the first time in 18 matches to help Tottenham knock Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup.
Werner had endured a torrid run of form in recent weeks, with squandered chances against Manchester United, Ferencvaros and AZ Alkmaar, but ended his goal drought in style on Wednesday.
“It was a tough game. To score a goal after tough weeks for me was also very nice, especially to have it at home,” Werner said.
“How the crowd reacted, I think it was more not that they were like, ‘finally he did it,’ it was more like relief from them to me.
“They say, ‘we saw he will do it one day’. And finally I can do it. Yeah, the hard work at the end brought the success and I have to continue with that.
“When I saw the goal back, it was way more confident the shot and wanting to score this goal than all the other chances. I have to continue with that.”
Mikel Arteta hails Arsenal’s attitude in Carabao Cup win
14:33 , Jamie BraidwoodMikel Arteta was delighted with the attitude of his Arsenal players as they comfortably made their way into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 win at Preston on Wednesday night.
Coming off a 2-2 draw with Liverpool and ahead of a difficult run of away fixtures against Newcastle, Inter Milan and Chelsea, Arteta made eight changes to his side and was rewarded with a strong performance in which Arsenal always looked in complete control.
“(The attitude was) very good,” Arteta said. “We talked about that, about playing with enthusiasm in this game, playing with the right attitude and commitment and they certainly showed that so I’m very happy to be in the quarter-finals.”
Carabao Cup quarter-final: Head to heads
14:04 , Jamie BraidwoodSouthampton vs Liverpool
Holders Liverpool will return to the south coast when they face Southampton in the quarter-finals, after beating Brighton in the fourth round. The Reds have not lost to Southampton in their last six meetings, dating back to a 1-0 defeat in January 2021.
Liverpool will visit St Mary’s on 24 November, following the international break. Southampton are winless in the Premier League, with one draw and eight defeats from nine games, but they will hope to get off the mark before the visit of Arne Slot’s side.
Liverpool and Southampton last met in the fifth round of the FA Cup last season, with the Reds winning 3-0. These teams also played a Carabao Cup semi-final in 2016/17, with Southampton winning both legs 1-0 to reach their first final since 1979.
Carabao Cup quarter-final: Head to heads
13:33 , Jamie BraidwoodNewcastle vs Brentford
Brentford have just one win against Newcastle in 75 years. Fortunately for Thomas Frank, that came in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup in 2020 as the Bees reached the semi-finals of the competition for the first time in their 131-year history.
Brentford went on to lose to Tottenham in the semi-finals and they will have to travel to St James’ Park for this season’s quarter-final, with Newcastle hoping to return to the Carabao Cup final after defeat to Manchester United two seasons ago.
Newcastle have won their last five matches against Brentford in the Premier League, including a 4-2 win on the last day of last season. They will visit Brentford in the Premier League on 7 December, two weeks before the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
Carabao Cup quarter-final: Head to heads
13:03 , Jamie BraidwoodArsenal vs Crystal Palace
Arsenal and Crystal Palace have not met this season but they will do so twice in a week in December, with the Carabao Cup quarter-final at the Emirates followed by a Premier League clash at Selhurst Park four days later.
The Gunners have won their last four against Palace, by a combined score of 12-2. There have been emphatic 5-0 and 4-1 wins at home under Mikel Arteta over the last couple of seasons.
Palace’s last win over Arsenal was a 3-0 victory at Selhurst in April 2022, as the wheels fell of Arsenal’s top-four bid that campaign.
The last time they met in a cup was in the 1998, with Arsenal progressing through from the fifth round after a replay.
Carabao Cup quarter-final: Head to heads
12:31 , Jamie BraidwoodTottenham vs Manchester United
Spurs were 3-0 winners at Old Trafford earlier this season, in one of their best performances under Ange Postecoglou. Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a red card that was later overturned, but Tottenham were dominant against Erik ten Hag’s team.
It could be all change at Old Trafford by the time the Carabao Cup quarter-finals come around, however. Ruben Amorim is expected to be appointed by this week.
Manchester United have not beaten Tottenham in their last four meetings - conceding at least two goals in every game - and you have to go back to October 2022 for their last win over Spurs.
Their last meeting in a cup competition was in the 2017-18 FA Cup semi-finals. Jose Mourinho’s side beat Mauricio Pochettino’s team 2-1 at Wembley thanks to Ander Herrera’s winner.
Ange Postecoglou pleased for Timo Werner after ‘tough time’ in front of goal
12:02 , Jamie BraidwoodTimo Werner scored his first of the season and ended his goal drought with a well-taken opener against Manchester City.
Although the German missed further chances in the second half, Ange Postecoglou hopes Werner is able to “kick on” after admitting he went through a “tough time”.
“It was a great move for the first one and great for Timo to finish as he has been going through a tough time,” Postecoglou said after the 2-1 win over City.
“With the attacking players it kinds of weighs on them when they don’t score orfinish stuff off.
“For him to score tonight and in an important moment of the game was great and hopefully that sorts of helps him kick on.”

Arne Slot praises Liverpool stand-in after Carabao Cup progress
11:02 , Jamie BraidwoodArne Slot was full of praise for Liverpool goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who made key saves in the 3-2 win away to Brighton as the holders returned to the quarter-finals.
Jaros was handed a rare start with Alisson Becker injured until after the November break and Caoimhin Kelleher rested ahead of a further run in goal.
“Everybody could see how important his saves were,” Slot said. “I think the first big chance of the game was for them where he saved the 1-vs-1 and in the second half of course we all remember one or two saves as well.
“But he also added to that how comfortable he was with the ball at his feet: making the right choices on when to go short and when to clip the ball towards the striker.”
Mikel Arteta pleased for Gabriel Jesus after ending goal drought
10:25 , Jamie BraidwoodArsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised Gabriel Jesus for scoring his first goal since January in the 3-0 win over Preston and backed the forward to “move on” from his goal drought.
The Brazilian has fallen out of favour with Kai Havertz impressing as Arsenal’s lead striker and Bukayo Saka indispensable on the right.
“His first since January I think so it’s been a long time,” Arteta said after Arsenal advanced to the quarter-finals. “That’s going to, I think, unlock that thing mentally, and move on, I think he had a good performance tonight.
“I’m vVery happy. I think it’s going to unlock that for him, he looks really happy. He’s performing, that attitude is there always, but he need that feeling that he can put the ball in the back of the net.”
Unai Emery defends team selection after Villa knocked out
09:55 , Lawrence OstlereAston Villa boss Unai Emery had no regrets about his team selection after watching his much-changed side crash out of the Carabao Cup to Crystal Palace.
Emery made wholesale changes to his line-up, with Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, Amadou Onana and Ross Barkley not even in the matchday squad.
And it came back to bite as Palace booked their spot in the last eight with a 2-1 win thanks to Eberechi Eze and Daichi Kamada goals either side of Jhon Duran’s leveller.
Emery insisted he would pick the same side if he played the match 100 times again.
“We started with 11 players in the first-team squad,” he said. “We started with Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos, they can play in the starting XI playing against Bayern Munich.
“We started with (Ian) Maatsen and Kosta (Nedeljkovic). We started with (Boubacar) Kamara, with John McGinn, Leon Bailey, Jaden Philogene, Jhon Duran, (Emiliano) Buendia, I don’t know if I can have some regret.
“We are with our way, building the team, building the structure. Today we competed, but we lost. Of course I am disappointed and frustrated, but we competed with the players to get the performance.
“If I am repeating this match 100 times I am playing with the same players.”
Ruud van Nistelrooy keen to work under Ruben Amorim
09:35 , Lawrence OstlereInterim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is keen to form part of Ruben Amorim’s new coaching set-up as Manchester United continue talks to hire the Sporting Lisbon boss.
The Red Devils called time on Erik ten Hag’s 29-month reign after the Old Trafford hierarchy unanimously decided enough was enough following Sunday’s late loss at West Ham.
Van Nistelrooy was put in temporary charge as United look for a new head coach, with the club informing Sporting they would pay the 10million euros (£8.3m) termination clause in Amorim’s contract.
Negotiations continue as the Red Devils seek to bring in the Portuguese as quickly as possible, but Wednesday’s 5-2 Carabao Cup win against Leicester suggested they are in safe hands if the situation drags on.
Asked if he is happy to remain in interim charge as negotiations for Amorim continue, Van Nistelrooy told Sky Sports: “Of course - I came here as an assistant to help the club.
“Now in this role I’m helping as long as I’m needed. And in the future in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further, to build towards the future and that’s what I’m here for.”
Postecoglou reacts to Spurs win over City
08:59 , Lawrence Ostlere“It’s a cup tie played against a formidable opponent, I thought we did well for the most part,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports.
“We didn’t allow too many clearcut chances, we could have put the game away but City are always going to push you,” he added.
Spurs sink City to progress in League Cup
08:44 , Lawrence OstlereTottenham Hotspur beat Manchester City 2-1 with goals from Timo Werner and Pape Matar Sarr.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou remains in with a chance of fulfilling his promise to win a trophy in his second season as coach of the North London club after a superb attacking display.
City made seven changes form the side that beat Southampton 1-0 at the weekend and they were opened up early as Spurs quickly played through their press. Dejan Kulusevski picked out Werner in the box, and the German striker lashed the ball into the net for his first goal of the season.
Sarr got the second in the 25th minute after the ball found its way to him outside the penalty area following a well-worked corner, and the Senegalese midfielder curled it brilliantly inside the right-hand post.
City pulled one back in first-half stoppage time as Matheus Nunes connected with a cross from Savinho to score with their first effort on target.
Having already lost key players this season, City coach Pep Guardiola said he wanted his side to perform well with no injuries, but Savinho picked up a knock that saw him carried off in the 62nd minute.
That robbed City of momentum, but Nico O’Reilly still almost grabbed a late equaliser, only for substitute Yves Bissouma to clear the ball off the line as Spurs hung on for victory.
Eze injury a worry for Crystal Palace despite win over Aston Villa
08:00 , Jamie BraidwoodCrystal Palace’s victory over Aston Villa was another step in the right direction after they followed up their Premier League win over Tottenham at the weekend.
It came at a cost, though, as Eberechi Eze limped off with a hamstring injury and was soon followed by Adam Wharton in a concern ahead of a crunch game at Wolves on Saturday.
“It is a problem with the hamstring, we don’t know how serious it is,” manager Oliver Glasner said. “But the muscle (injury) is not always the best information you can get. Ebs is too early to tell.
“He wanted to come off, he signalled to come off. He said it was not possible to carry on. I hope it is not too serious, but I don’t know. It’s not the best information I got today that Ebs had to leave the pitch.
“Adam is a more positive one because it is nothing new. We spoke about it many times, he has had groin problems for many months. We thought he needed a break today but he gave the thumbs up and said he was fine.”
Ethan Nwaneri impresses in Arsenal’s win over Preston
07:00 , Jamie BraidwoodEthan Nwaneri’s performance delighted Mikel Arteta but did not surprise him as the 17-year-old’s superb strike helped Arsenal to a 3-0 win over Preston and into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.
The teenager bent in a fine first-half goal after Gabriel Jesus’s first strike since January had set Arsenal on their way, with substitute Kai Havertz adding the third early in the second half.
It was another stand-out Carabao Cup performance from academy product Nwaneri, who got his first senior goals with a brace in Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Bolton in the previous round. He might have had two at Deepdale too, but a late strike hit the crossbar.
“He did it yesterday in training too, so we’re getting used to that,” Arteta said.
“He’s a big talent, he’s got the right attitude, he’s got the right players and context around him and we need to make sure that we put brick by brick in the right tempo, in the right order, but we have some player there.”
Manchester United find ‘luck’ in front of goal
15:57 , Jamie BraidwoodManchester United finally “had some luck” as they put five goals past Leicester, according to Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“Five goals but I have to say the chances against West Ham, Fenerbahce and Crystal Palace, we created so much more bigger chances and couldn’t finish,” he said.
“All of a sudden we had some luck on our side and that made it a great night. It is always the target to react and go straight back into attack ourselves.
“But I have to say the reaction of players after the Leicester goals were excellent and they deserve the credit. I am glad the crowd go home with a nice night of football.”
Maresca defends team selection as Chelsea knocked out of Carabao Cup
06:00 , Jamie BraidwoodEnzo Maresca defended his team selection after Chelsea were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle, four days after they had beaten the same opposition in the Premier League.
Maresca named an entirely different starting XI from the weekend’s league clash, a decision he defended post-match: “I think it works if we analyse the performance, if we analyse the result it didn’t work, but for 22-23 minutes, until their goal, we were in control.
“Then after the goal we lost control for 10 minutes, where we also conceded the second one. Again, the last 10 minutes of first half we had two clear chances that unfortunately we didn’t score. Second half we were in control of the game.
“The most important thing is the result. But the performance, I think we lost the game because of 10 minutes after the first goal we conceded, then for the rest we were quite good.”
Ange Postecoglou ‘sees growth’ in Tottenham after beating Man City
05:00 , Jamie BraidwoodAnge Postecoglou said he was not thinking about “forward steps” after beating Manchester City to advance to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals but said he is seeing the growth in his Tottenham team.
“We’re just going to keep working on what we’ve been doing and keep believing in the process of what we’re trying to build,” Postecoglou said after the 2-1 win.
“The key thing for us was obviously the victory. In a cup competition, ultimately, that’s the main thing. You’ve got to win to keep going. And the fact that it was against a formidable opponent is great for the whole group.
“I continue to see growth in this group of players and this team. I want them to have these moments because I know how important it is to accelerate the growth.”
Guardiola admits Man City are ‘in difficulty’ as injuries mount up
04:00 , Jamie BraidwoodPep Guardiola claimed Manchester City were in trouble after they suffered further injuries in a 2-1 loss at Tottenham in the Carabao Cup to leave them with only 13 first-team players available.
Already without Kyle Walker, Rodri, Oscar Bobb, Jeremy Doku, Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish for the fourth-round tie, Manuel Akanji was withdrawn ahead of kick-off before Savinho left on a stretcher in the second half.
“We have 13 players (available) so we are in real difficulty,” Guardiola said. “I think when we are in trouble, like we are because in nine years it never happen this situation with many, many injuries for many, many reasons, in these situations, the players they make a step forward and they are more together than ever and they will try to do this week in this short time to recover.
“It’s tough. Akanji yesterday, I didn’t know it, in the last action felt something in the muscular part of his body and today in the warm-up he didn’t feel good. He said he could take a risk and I said no, no risk.
“That’s why the guys who are here and making an effort to be with us, fighting to be with us and playing with pain and focus for us, these guys I will not forget it.”

Ruud van Nistelrooy happy to ‘help and serve’ Manchester United
02:00 , Jamie BraidwoodRuud van Nistelrooy has indicated he wants to be a part of Ruben Amorim’s new coaching set-up after the interim Manchester United manager oversaw an entertaining Carabao Cup win against Leicester.
Asked if he is happy to remain in interim charge as negotiations for Amorim continue, Van Nistelrooy told Sky Sports: “Of course – I came here as an assistant to help the club.
“Now in this role I’m helping as long as I’m needed. And in the future in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further, to build towards the future and that’s what I’m here for.”
Pushed on whether he wants to be part of the new coaching set-up at United, the former striker said: “As I said, I’m here to help, I’m here to serve, I’m here to give my everything for the club in any capacity with so many people here around me that want the best for the club and that will never change.”

Eddie Howe feels cup win can be a big moment in Newcastle’s season
00:31 , Jamie BraidwoodEddie Howe was delighted with Newcastle’s response after they reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup for the third year in a row with a 2-0 win against Chelsea.
The Magpies bounced back from Sunday’s Premier League defeat against the same opponents at Stamford Bridge as two first-half goals sealed victory on Tyneside.
A mistake at the back allowed Alexander Isak to put Newcastle ahead in the 23rd minute and they extended their lead just three minutes later when Joe Willock’s deflected header was turned into his own net by Axel Disasi.
“We needed a performance and a result, I think we got that tonight,” Newcastle head coach Howe said.
“Especially in the first half, I thought it was hallmark us at our best; front foot, really good energy, good feel, good quality, good attitude – most importantly – and a massive win for us.”

Arne Slot insists Cody Gakpo has big part to play at Liverpool
00:01 , Jamie BraidwoodLiverpool boss Arne Slot insisted Cody Gakpo is very much part of his Premier League plans after the forward’s stunning double set the Carabao Cup holders on course for the quarter-finals.
Gakpo gave a timely reminder of his talents on Wednesday evening with a pair of powerful finishes before Luis Diaz sealed the Reds’ 3-2 fourth-round victory at Brighton.
The Netherlands international has been a peripheral figure at Anfield since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp in the summer, starting just two of nine top-flight fixtures.
Slot, who made eight changes for the Amex Stadium tie, was impressed by the impact of his squad players, including his fellow Dutchman.

Tottenham answer biggest question of their season to fuel Carabao Cup dream
Wednesday 30 October 2024 23:08 , Jamie Braidwood at the Tottenham Hotspur StadiumThe roar of relief was everything. Tottenham could not afford to mess up this opportunity but Ange Postecoglou’s side held firm, knocking Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup to hand Pep Guardiola’s team their first defeat of the season. Tottenham’s ability to self-destruct ensured this was still a gripping cup tie, even as City chased the game in second gear. It was almost enough and although Bernardo Silva’s protests at full-time suggested City wanted to win this just as much as Spurs, the sight of Erling Haaland grinning on the bench, an unused substitute even as City trailed for over 90 minutes, told a different story.

Ruud van Nistelrooy happy to ‘help and serve’ Manchester United’s next manager
Wednesday 30 October 2024 22:58 , Richard JollyRuud van Nistelrooy has vowed to stay on at Manchester United under Ruben Amorim if he is wanted to and said he will serve as interim manager for as long as they ask him to.
The former United striker won his first game in temporary charge after Erik ten Hag’s sacking by overseeing a 5-2 win over Leicester in the Carabao Cup, with both Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes scoring twice.
But while United have made Amorim their top target to take over and are willing to trigger his release clause with Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese has a 30-day release clause and United are in negotiations to bring the 39-year-old to Old Trafford sooner and to try and take his coaching staff of Daniel Fernandes and Adelio Candido as well.

Carabao Cup quarter-final draw
Wednesday 30 October 2024 22:35 , Harry Latham-CoyleNot long now until the draw is made. In a pretty gloomy season for Southampton so far, Russell Martin would surely love a winnable tie - be that against a smaller side or one of the bigger teams with a particularly devilish December in terms of fixture congestion.
Chelsea’s defeat does mean that we have avoided a nightmare scenario that would have seen Enzo Maresca’s side scheduled for a Conference League and Carabao Cup tie in the same midweek.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s debut outing proves Manchester United were right to dismiss Erik ten Hag
Wednesday 30 October 2024 22:15 , Richard Jolly at Old TraffordRuud van Nistelrooy always promised goals for Manchester United. There were 36 in his first season as a player, 44 in his second. There were seven in his first game as their interim manager, five of them for United. The third-lowest scorers in the Premier League, United discovered a prolific streak under him. If it is to prove his lone evening in charge of United, what a night for him.

The match which showed why Liverpool’s left flank may be about to change
Wednesday 30 October 2024 22:06 , Karl Matchett at the Amex StadiumArne Slot didn’t do a whole lot of switching around his Liverpool lineup in the opening weeks of the season, to the extent that he was questioned about rotation and managing minutes several times and had to explain why he hadn’t needed to, much at least, at Feyenoord.
Fast forward a couple of months into his reign and there has certainly been more switching about in midweek action, Champions League and Carabao Cup matches offering an opportunity to fringe first-teamers and with one or two of those - Curtis Jones most notably - who had been onlookers at the start of the season being far more regularly in the initial XI for matches now.
But in an entertaining, though otherwise probably unremarkable, fourth round League Cup match at Brighton and Hove Albion, Slot perhaps gave an indication - and more importantly was shown the reasons - that there might now be the most significant early switch-up in his team over the coming weeks.

Ethan Nwaneri shines as Arsenal ease past Preston
Wednesday 30 October 2024 22:02 , Harry Latham-CoyleEthan Nwaneri grabbed the spotlight with a stunning strike as Arsenal eased into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 win over Preston.
The 17-year-old Nwaneri, who scored his first senior goals with a brace when the Gunners romped to a 5-1 win over Bolton in the previous round, was at the heart of things again and bent in a fine shot to double Arsenal’s lead after Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring with his first goal of the season.
Kai Havertz came off the bench to add a third as Arsenal extended Preston’s unwanted record of having played more games in this competition than any other club, now 185, without making the last eight.
