Updated

Full-time: Hull 1 Doncaster 2

Full-time: Exeter 2 Crawley Town 1

Crewe and Sunderland has gone to penalties, and they’re kicking towards the home fans. There’s plenty of this type of thing going on all night.

Barnsley make it 2-2 in the 98th minute against Tranmere.

That’s 99 minutes being played at Stevenage and now it will also go to penalties, of which nine are headed to spot-kicks. 100 minutes clearly not enough.

Updated

It’s full-time and Stoke have beaten West Brom 2-1.

A late equaliser for Sheffield Wednesday, from Tyreeq Bakinson, means Stockport have been taken to a penalty shootout.

Peterborough have gone through on penalties against Swindon.

Full-time: Rotherham 1-1 Morecambe – and that’s going to penalties too.

Charly Alcaraz has scored for Southampton at Gillingham, meaning it’s 3-1. Saints have had 72 percent of possession but that’s the first shot on target.

Reading putting ‘wall to the sword, for a first win since last winter. Well done, Reading. Their fans have suffered. Though may need to make a hasty exit this evening.

Spot-kicks looming in a few of these matches, whenever they actually finish. That’s anyone’s guess at the moment. It’s just lucky that transport networks are so flexible these days and….oh.

Full time scores in the 7.30 kick-offs.

  • Mansfield 2 Grimsby 0

  • Swansea 3 Northampton 0

  • Newport County 3 Charlton 1

  • Peterborough 1 Swindon 1 – going to penalties.

Many of these games are running to 100 minutes. They’ve invented a new game. Well done, everyone.

Josh “Gino” Ginnelly, on his Swansea debut, has just walloped in a beautiful goal, and that caps off a 3-0 win over Northampton.

Wrexham and Wigan continue to be level at the Racecourse, two well-matched teams and not the loudest atmosphere.

Breaking news: Lopetegui out at Wolves

Gillingham go three goals up on Southampton

Robbie McKenzie got it at Priestfields, and Saints have suffered a huge embarrassment.

Charlie Savage, son of Robbie, signed from Manchester United, has just smashed in a beauty of a free-kick and it’s Millwall 0-3 Reading.

Blackburn lead Walsall 4-2, and look to be cruising into the next round.

Gillingham are giving Southampton a right chasing. They lead 2-0 and despite those 11 changes the optimism of Friday night has taken a battering.

Updated

Stoke are back in front – it’s 2-1, a goal from Andre Vidigal, the Portuguese striker.

West Brom level at Stoke, and it’s a nice goal from Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Sunderland have equalised against Crewe, with a goal by Chris Rigg: note, not Chris Riggott.

Notts County, who accompanied Wrexham out of the National League, have not had a happy start to life as an EFL club. They’re losing 2-0 to Lincoln and are now a man down, with Aden Baldwin sent off for a second bookable.

Back up at the Racecourse, Wigan take to the field, and to a huge roar, they get back underway.

Another shock is on the cards, as Gillingham now lead Southampton 2-0, with Robbie McKenzie.

That’s a full-time score: Huddersfield 2-3 Middlesbrough, with the ten men having to play most of the game a man down.

Kyle Hudlin, 6’ 9”, has just scored for Huddersfield against Middlesbrough, and it’s 2-3 deep in time added on. How much of that will be played, lord only knows.

Half-time score: Wrexham 0-0 Wigan

Both teams frustrated, Wigan by the quality of Wrexham’s defence, Wrexham by missing a couple of good chances. Both team might feel they should be winning.

Updated

Stoke are leading West Brom 1-0, and Sol Sidibe, son of Mamady Sidibé, the club’s former striker, has been showing off his skills as a 16-year-old.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson looks frustrated, his team have missed a couple of chances in the first half. Wigan continue to pass the ball around a bit better.

Still 0-0 at the Racecourse, where Chris Sze of Wigan has just been booked for a lunging foul. Five minutes are added on at the end of the half.

Justin Madson gets in touch: “I am in a similar boat to Joe P. Dismayed at there being 23 matches and only 2 on TV in the US. With the amount of emphasis the executives in media here put on Wrexham, I am just happy they deigned it appropriate to send at least one broadcast group to a different match instead of a Ryan Reynolds face cam. Hull/Doncaster been a real cracker. If only all these teams could be owned by celebrities, we could see some proper lower league match-ups we don’t usually get to watch. Regardless, we are watching cup football and that is always a good thing. Cheers to the new season!”

It’s Huddersfield 1-3 Middlesbrough now, with Riley McGree, who sounds like a 1980s Disney live-action flop film, has got a decisive goal. A good goal, too, cutting in and shooting at goal.

Half-times in the 7.45 kick-offs.

  • Barnsley 1 Tranmere 1

  • Millwall 0 Reading 1

  • Notts County 0 Lincoln City 1

  • Exeter 0 Crawley Town 1

  • Sheff Wed 0 Stockport County

  • Cheltenham 0 Birmingham 2

  • Sunderland 0 Crewe 1

  • Plymouth 2 Leyton Orient 0

  • Accrington Stanley 0 Bradford

  • Derby 0 Blackpool 2

Barnsley and Tranmere are level at 1-1, Herbie Kane scores a goal that owes so much to a goalkeeping goof from Joe Murphy.

By the by, Harry Kane didn’t start against Barcelona for Tottenham. Though did play 80 minutes on Sunday. MOTWYW.

Preston get one back against Salford. It’s 1-2 after Ben Woodburn’s goal.

Shock ahoy: Crewe are winning 1-0 at Sunderland, Luke Offord heading in at the back post, just on the stroke of half-time.

Affairs of the Herts: Stevenage are level at 1-1 with Watford, with Josh March on the mark.

Champions League news: PSV are beating Sturm Graz 3-1, and the winner of that tie will face Rangers in the next round.

Southampton, with those 11 changes, are still losing 1-0 at Gillingham.

Huddersfield 1-2 Middlesbrough, the team with a man advantage lead in the 7pm kick-off, with Isiah Jones scoring for Michael Carrick’s team.

The exciting game of the night is Blackburn 2-2 Walsall. The Class of 92’s Salford now lead Preston 2-0 with another goal from Connor McLennan.

At the Racecourse, Wigan have been playing very good football until they get to the final third. Wrexham have sat back on the counter. Still 0-0.

Some half-times in the 7.30 kick-offs

  • Mansfield 1-0 Grimsby

  • Swansea 1-0 Northampton

  • Peterborough 1-0 Swindon

  • Newport 0-1 Charlton

But not yet up at Wrexham. Ollie Palmer banging the ground as he passes up a shot. Wigan are playing some nice stuff but with little penetration.

Cheltenham now 2-0 down to Birmingham from Bacuna’s free-kick. Portsmouth has equalised against Forest Green, and Blackpool now 2-0 up on Derby. Swansea lead Northampton 1-0

The goals are flying in.

  • Exeter 0 Crawley Town 1 (Klaidi Lolos 15)

Joe Pearson is in touch from Indianapolis. Happy new season, Joe. “ It’s good to watch some live football (instead of DVRed WWC matches)! On ESPN+, my choices are Hull-Doncaster or Wrexham-Wigan. Of course I’m going with Hollywood’s Own Eleven. On a completely different topic, I started watching ‘Peaky Blinders’ about a week ago. I love Nick Cave, but ‘Red Right Hand’ has burrowed into my brain and it won’t let go. Favorite Cave track, John? I’m partial to the over-the-top ‘O’Malley’s Bar’. You?”

Here’s four from very different Cave career points: Shivers by The Boys Next Door – the young Aussie pop star. Nick The Stripper from the Birthday Party – snub-nosed junkie. From Her To Eternity – The Bad Seeds (so good live this one, RIP Anita Lane) and then from 2016, Jesus Alone, Nick grieving for his son with a pre-cog lyric.

Play them all loud.

Stockport have taken the lead at Sheffield Wednesday, with Paddy Madden, the talisman getting the goal. League Two leads the Championship, just as they do at Gillingham, where an Ashley Nadesan goal has Southampton a goal down.

Wrexham take to the field, and it’s a rather decent evening between the Welsh mountains and the lower Dee Valley. No James McClean for the home team, presumably as he’s just been bought from Wigan.

It’s half-time in that game between Huddersfield and Middlesbrough, still 1-1, as up at the Racecourse, the teams get ready to kick off.

Hull City lead Doncaster in the M18 derby – Oscar Estupinan has knocked in.

Crisis club Reading are winning at Millwall, with Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan galloping through a rather statue-like Lions defence.

Couple of goals, with Peterborough leading Swindon at home and Swansea 1-0 up on Northampton. The goalscorers are Joel Randall and Joel Piroe respectively.

Phil Parkinson, the Wrexham boss, has been talking ahead of what he sees as “an interesting battle”. His opposite number is Shaun Maloney, another Wigan Wembley hero from a decade ago.

Such is the hype around Wrexham that Sky are interviewing the local vicar, who says he’s had a raft of Americans visiting his church. You can now go on a guided tour of Wrexham – a sentence that seemed unlikely in 2019.

Those 7.45 kick-offs are coming in.

All happening in that Huddersfield v Middlesbrough game: Jaheim Headley has been sent off for a professional foul, last-man foul on Hayden Hackney.

A reminder, or perhaps news, is that the draw is split into north and south sections of the draw. Nobody has that far to travel.

There are no replays in the Carabao Cup and a winner of the tie will be determined on the night. Should the match be drawn at the end of 90 minutes, the match will immediately go to a penalty shootout without extra-time.

We may, however, see all that time added on that the EFL and Community Shield featured at the weekend. That appears here to stay. For now, anyway.

And there’s even room for an early Warnock celebration as Kian Harratt has opened the scoring for Huddersfield against Boro.

The earliest kick-off tonight is Huddersfield v Middlesbrough, Neil Warnock taking on the club he managed in the 2020-21 season, his last job in fact until he returned to Huddersfield earlier this year.

They’re up for this one in North Wales.

Preamble

Carabao Energy Drink is available from stockists and retailers throughout the UK, it says here. And yet it remains as mysterious to most as Hafnia was in the 1980s or whatever it was CR Smith actually did. The energy drink you will see people slugging down on trains or in vans in the mornings is still that associated with top-division clubs in Austria and Germany. The old League Cup is the first major trophy of the season and later on in the season, Manchester United will be defending it. Before that, before the Premier League can even begin, it’s clubs from the lower three divisions. Which means that Wrexham, stars of the silver stream, make their return to the competition for the first time since 2008. Their return to the EFL didn’t go so well, being on the end of a 5-3 humping by MK Dons, that well-known force for authenticity in Our Leagues. So, Wigan, who pulled off a rather decent 2-1 win over Derby in League One, are their opponents. Perhaps the jet lag from the US tour might have been shaken out by the Wrexham players. Their manager, Phil Parkinson, guided Bradford City to the 2013 final of this competition, and loves a cup run. Their owners don’t mind a bit of exposure.

Beyond that, the pick of the ties is Southampton, outstanding in winning 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday on Friday, and their trip to Gillingham, who opened their League Two campaign with a good 1-0 win at Stockport.
