Car thief threatens staff with a baseball bat at Waterford dealership - but plan soon goes wrong

A car thief threatened staff with a baseball bat at Waterford car dealership before stealing a vehicle.

The aggressive incident saw a man, aged in his 30s, enter the premises in Waterford City at 4.40pm on Monday.

He is believed to have used a baseball bat to force staff to hand over the keys to a brand new car before driving off in it.

However, he did not get far and was stopped and arrested just a short distance away by Gardai.

The man appeared before Waterford District Court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until a further court date this month.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating an incident that occurred at commercial premises in Waterford City on the 13th June 2022 at 4.40pm, where a car was stolen.

"They were stopped some distance away from the scene and a man (30s) was arrested and conveyed to Waterford Garda Station.

"They appeared before the Waterford District Court on the 14th June 2022."
