A car was smashed outside the home of an alleged Scots paedophile after missiles were thrown at riot police in a heated stand-off with officers.
Police have launched a probe after the incident on Craigmore Street in Dundee at around 8.30pm on Friday September 2. Officers were called to reports of a gathering outside a property, believed to belong to a paedophile, on the street.
As locals protested, a picture showed a damaged vehicle at a property on the street. The back and side window of the car can be seen to be smashed with glass shattered on the ground as two police officers stand guard at the door of the home.
The crowd were eventually dispersed but officers say they are working to identify those responsible. The incident came after a linked incident in Ballindean Road in the city which saw an angry mob facing off against riot police outside a property.
The crowd were heard shouting 'beast out' as they clashed with officers. Cops arrived at the street as the group began to gather to protest, understood to be about an alleged paedophile living in a property in the area.
The person was eventually removed by cops as the atmosphere turned toxic with missiles being thrown at officers. In dramatic footage the mob were heard shouting "paedophile" and "beast out" as officers holding riot shields form a line outside the property.
Following that incident, police slammed those who became hostile in the group and said they will be working to identify those responsible before taking action. Officers confirmed they are treating the two incidents in Dundee as linked.
Local Area Commander, Chief Inspector Ross Fitzgerald said: “We are continuing enquiries into an incident where a crowd had gathered on Craigmore Street in Dundee on Friday evening which officers were called to around 8.30pm on Friday, September 2.
“Officers attended to assist and engaged with the group, who later dispersed. A car was damaged and a window was smashed during the incident and we are working to identify those responsible.
“We would like to reassure the local community in these areas that increased patrols are being carried out to provide public reassurance following these incidents of disorder and I would urge anyone with concerns to speak to local officers.”
Chief Inspector Fitzgerald continued: “Around 5.30pm, officers were called to reports of a large crowd gathering outside an address in Ballindean Road, Dundee.
“Unfortunately during the incident some of those gathered became extremely hostile towards police and objects were thrown at officers and vehicles. Public order trained officers were called to assist.
“Police Officers have a duty to ensure the safety of everyone involved and whilst no officers were injured, this kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable.
“Although the crowd later dispersed we are currently carrying out enquiries to establish more details on the offences committed and identify those responsible and take the appropriate action. This will include reviewing any available video footage.”
