A car engulfed in flames has exploded on a road just outside Ayrshire this evening.
The motor was ablaze on the hard shoulder of the M77 southbound near to junction five.
One eyewitness from Kilmarnock spotted the car, which appears to be a Volvo, on fire just after 6pm this evening and told how debris hit his vehicle.
He told Ayrshire Live: "Smoke was pouring from the car and it looked like the front of it that was one fire.
"As I was driving past the car there was a huge explosion. I think one of the tyres burst.
"Bits of the car went flying and hit off of my car. It was actually quite frightening. I hope that everyone is okay."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police were called around 6.20pm following the report of a car on fire on the M77 Southbound near junction 5.
"Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished safely by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and there were no injuries."
