Car left wrecked after smashing into phone mast with road shut off by police

Dramatic pictures show a car left wrecked after it smashed into a phone mast in Stockport.

The crash happened on Etchells Road in the Heald Green area at around 11pm last night (Thursday). Emergency services including police, fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene after a car crashed into the 5G phone mast.

Police said 'the extent of the injuries suffered' by those in the car 'are expected not to be life threatening'. A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service later confirmed that four people were taken to hospital.

One was a man - aged in his 20s - who suffered a serious head injury, the spokesperson added. Photos taken straight after the crash last night showed the car left badly damaged.

The front of it, including the windscreen, was left completely smashed. One local resident described hearing a 'screech and loud bang' before the smash.

They said they saw fire crews help rescue at least person from the car. This morning, the road remains cordoned off between Turves Road and Wilmslow Road.

Pictures show the damaged phone mast, which has been left on a slant, within the cordon. Police said the road will remain closed for safety reasons. A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service has confirmed that four people were taken to hospital from the scene.

In a statement, a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: "Greater Manchester Police were called to a road traffic collision on Etchells Road, Stockport at around 11pm on Thursday 3 November 2022. It is believed it involved a single car where it subsequently hit a mast.

"Emergency services responded to the scene to assist and the road remains closed at this time for safety reasons. The extent of the injuries suffered are expected not to be life threatening.

"Anyone with any details or information that will help with enquires are asked to call 101 quoting incident 3673 of 03/11/22."

The M.E.N has also contacted the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service for information.
