A driver is on the run after allegedly running a red light and hitting a 12-year-old when police detected an unregistered car in Brisbane.

Officers noticed the Commodore while doing checks in the southern suburb of MacGregor on Thursday afternoon and moved into traffic with their lights activated.

It's alleged the driver sped away from them, running the light and striking the boy as he crossed the road, causing a head injury.

Officers believe the driver exited the car and fled through a nearby shopping centre.

The boy was transported to Queensland Childrens Hospital with multiple fractures in a serious but stable condition.

A crime scene has been declared and investigations continue into the whereabouts of the driver, described as a male in his 20s.

The force's ethical standards unit has been advised of the incident.
