Longford Town captain Sam Verdon has left the club after just one game of the new season.
Verdon, who was in his sixth year with the Midlanders either side of spells with Finn Harps and Bray, had only signed a new contract in December.
He played in last Saturday’s 3-1 derby defeat at home to arch rivals Athlone Town and missed a penalty late in the game.
Neither party has revealed the reasons for the abrupt departure, but Verdon’s contract was cancelled before Wednesday night's transfer deadline.
It means the attacking midfielder can now be snapped up as an out-of-contract professional and Wexford are understood to be interested.
