Capcom has moved Onimusha: Way of the Sword forward by three weeks, shifting the action game's release from Sept. 25 to Friday, Sept. 4.
The company confirmed the new date in a July 2 investor release, which also describes Way of the Sword as the first completely new entry in the series in more than 20 years.
The earlier launch drops Onimusha into a busy stretch for action games. The Blood of Dawnwalker is scheduled for Sept. 3, while PlayStation's Marvel's Wolverine follows on Sept. 15.
Capcom has not provided a detailed production or business explanation for the shift. In an official store update, the company said it changed the date "in order to bring this game to you sooner," but it did not explain why Sept. 4 became preferable to Sept. 25.
Way of the Sword is set in a supernatural version of Edo-era Kyoto and stars Miyamoto Musashi, who wields the Oni Gauntlet against Genma enemies. Capcom has emphasized sword clashes, parries and Oni abilities as the center of the combat system.
The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
A free demo is already available, but one detail needs to be stated precisely: demo progress does not carry over into the full game. PlayStation says players who retain demo save data can instead receive the Charm: Kubi Akari bonus item when they start the full release.
Capcom also changed how the digital pre-order bonus works after moving the release date. The company says the bonus will be offered as an Early Adopter Bonus for a limited period after launch, so players who did not pre-order before the date change are not automatically locked out of it.
Claims that some Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders were canceled during the date change were not confirmed in the primary sources reviewed for this edit and have been removed. The same goes for the earlier draft's specific Xbox unlock time and its assumed 48-hour preload window.
Those details are not necessary to the core story. The verified news is cleaner: Capcom pulled the first completely new Onimusha release in more than two decades forward by 21 days, placing it directly into a crowded September release stretch.
