Two highly anticipated projects, 'Sentinel' by Phil Tippett and 'Sister Inconnue' by Anouk Whissell, are set to be showcased at the 2024 Cannes Frontières Platform. 'Sentinel,' created by the renowned Hollywood figure Phil Tippett, known for his work on 'Star Wars' and 'Jurassic Park,' promises a blend of nightmarish stop motion animation and experimental style reminiscent of 'Mad Dog.' The teaser hints at a battleground featuring giant bugs, attack droids, and mythical figures like Osiris and Anubis. On the other hand, 'Sister Inconnue' marks Anouk Whissell's solo directorial debut, exploring a ghost story rooted in a historical legend from the Acadian Deportation.
The Frontières Platform at Cannes will also feature a diverse range of genre films, showcasing the expanding landscape of genre cinema embraced by Hollywood, independent filmmakers, horror enthusiasts, and auteurs. The event will include a Buyers' Showcase presenting seven titles, covering a spectrum of themes from psychological realism to fun gore and social issue horror. Notable projects include 'Above the Knee,' 'Dead by Dawn,' 'Delivery Run,' 'LandLord,' 'Nesting,' 'Scared Shitless,' 'Bug Boy,' 'Cougar,' 'The Girl With the Green Eyes,' and 'My Stalker.'
Frontières Executive Director Annick Mahnert highlighted the growing visibility and support for genre films, with major studios like A24 and Neon backing genre projects. The Platform will also introduce prizes for outstanding projects, offering valuable post-production services to winners. Emerging talents like Capra Film from Austria and Make Way Film from the Netherlands will showcase their innovative works, reflecting the diverse and dynamic nature of contemporary genre filmmaking.
