Canceled 'Iron Man' Game Leak: Footage Pops Up on Reddit

A long-lost superhero project has finally resurfaced more than a decade after it was shelved.

Footage from the canceled "Iron Man" game once in development at "Just Cause" and "Mad Max" creator Avalanche Studios has made its way online, giving fans their first real look at a project many assumed was lost for good.

Canceled 'Iron Man' Game Footage Leaks Online

The footage originates from a restored build pulled from a PlayStation 3 devkit, according to files shared through the Internet Archive and later picked up by outlets covering the leak.

The Reddit post shared the information behind this latest leak, detailing how the game resembles other projects of Avalanche Studios, and claiming that this is different from EA's.

The clips show gameplay recordings from what appears to be an early prototype or E3 demo build, giving a rare glimpse at a project that had previously existed only as a story shared secondhand through interviews.

Until now, most of what fans knew about the game came from Avalanche Studios co-founder Christofer Sundberg, who discussed the project years after its cancellation. Sundberg described the experience of losing the game as painful, saying it looked absolutely amazing and that watching so much invested time and energy go to waste was the hardest part of the whole ordeal.

'Iron Man' Game From Avalanche Studios

According to IGN's report, Avalanche Studios spent roughly two years developing the open-world "Iron Man" title before Disney and Marvel canceled it around 2012, according to Sundberg.

He said the game was never intended as a straightforward movie tie-in and would likely have followed its own original storyline instead, giving the project more creative freedom than a typical licensed superhero game of that era.

Combat centered around punch-based melee mechanics, with Sundberg describing gameplay built around Iron Man's repulsor gloves and full aerial freedom to fly anywhere across the world.

Given Avalanche's track record with "Just Cause" and later "Mad Max," both known for expansive open world design and satisfying, physics-driven action, the canceled "Iron Man" project was positioned to lean on that same open worldfoundation. As described, the game was paired with the kind of heavy, impactful melee combat comparable to the "Batman: Arkham" series.

Sundberg attributed the cancellation to internal company politics, explaining that Disney wanted development sped up dramatically without adjusting the timeline in a way that would have overwhelmed the studio's team.

Is There Another 'Iron Man' Game Coming?

While Avalanche's version never saw the light of day, "Iron Man" fans are not entirely without hope. EA announced another "Iron Man" game back in 2022, developed by Motive Studio, the team behind the "Dead Space" remake.

The game is being built on Unreal Engine 5 rather than EA's usual Frostbite engine, a shift the studio made specifically to better support the kind of detailed, third-person action a superhero game demands.

Motive confirmed in a development update that the "Iron Man" team recently hit a significant internal milestone, even as EA shifted some staff across its broader studio lineup toward other projects like the next "Battlefield" title.

The game remains in active development with no confirmed release date, and EA has not shared additional details on combat, story, or platforms since its original 2022 announcement, leaving fans to keep waiting for a proper look at Motive's take on the character.
