Canberra's swanky new cocktail lounge is fit for the gods

Forget Mount Olympus - there's a new place in town for the gods to hang out. And Canberrans can join them for a drink or two.

You'll know you're in the right place when you see the Grecian-style statues holding Ambrosia bottles.

The Canberra distillery, which specialises in flavoured vodka and gin, has opened its own cocktail bar at Dairy Road. Just down from where the magic happens - aka the distillery - Ambrosia Lounge is a venue that embodies the brand's namesake.

"I really liked the meaning behind Ambrosia. It means nectar of the gods in Greek mythology," Ambrosia Distillery founder and distiller Andrew Galbraith says.

"It's what the Greek gods drank on Mount Olympus, so it just works well with an alcohol break.

"And I just love the imagery as well. All the different flavours in my range have a different Greek god or goddess on them, corresponding to the flavour, and the imagery translates."

When walking into Ambrosia Lounge you're met with heavily marbled tables, green velvet chairs and a brass bar. Across two levels, the lounge has been designed for a multitude of uses, from date nights and group escapades to small- and large-scale events, bridal showers, workshops, and everything in between.

As for its drinks offerings, it's more than just Ambrosia spirits that are being served - although they have been distilled with cocktail creation in mind.

"I wanted it to be a very cocktail-focused spirit, so I wanted as much flavour as I possibly could and have just one flavour as well," Galbraith says.

"None of the vodkas, especially, they're not mixed - they're just one flavour. So you've got a passionfruit vodka which is solely passionfruit, it's not mixed with other fruits and stuff like that.

"To make them into cocktails, you pretty much just need soda and a squeeze of lime for most of them ... I just wanted to make it as easy as possible."

But easy-to-drink spirits at home were always just the first step in the Ambrosia brand. A lounge was always the logical endpoint.

Galbraith has always worked behind the bar - he even left a medical degree to follow his passion for hospitality and distilling.

So when Molonglo Group approached him with the Dairy Road space, it was a no-brainer - almost as if the gods had planned it.

On the drinks menu are variations on traditional cocktails, as well as cocktails inspired by Ambrosia's unique flavours. Highlights include four different espresso martinis - traditional, spiced rum, toffee and chocolate - and Caprioskas using Ambrosia's passionfruit, lychee, mango and peach vodkas.

While the bar is not a restaurant, patrons will not go hungry with a range of snacks and starters available including charcuterie plates with freshly sliced cold meats, assorted cheese plates, soft burrata with olive oil, sea salt, and toasted sourdough, oven-baked brie drizzled with honey and served with crackers.

To finish, a small menu of desserts is available, including cannoli made by Canberra's famed Cannoli Brothers.

Ambrosia will also be hosting regular events at the Lounge, with the September calendar already booked to include chocolate making with Studio Cocoa, clay textured art classes and cocktails with Wild Blooms & Co, cocktail masterclasses with Ambrosia and cannoli classes with Cannoli Brothers.
