When bushwalker Steve Glaznieks of Ngunnawal was flicking through the dusty 1941 Brindabella field books of surveyor Colonel J.T.H. Goodwin, he could hardly believe his eyes.

There, on the final page, among neatly drawn contours and survey notes, were five words that stopped him in his tracks: Proposed site for skating lake.
