The Canal Street entry point to the New Orleans’ French Quarter has been identified as the only access point wide enough for a vehicle to enter Bourbon Street using the sidewalk. This revelation came from US Rep. Troy Carter, representing Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District, who highlighted that subsequent corners leading to Bourbon Street are too narrow for such access.
Carter raised concerns about the possibility of premeditated planning, questioning how long the perpetrator may have been plotting the attack. He pondered whether the individual had surveyed the area to identify this specific vulnerability at Canal Street.
Assurances have been made to address these security gaps swiftly. Carter mentioned that investigations in the days, weeks, and months ahead will shed light on the incident's planning. However, immediate actions are being taken to prevent any future breaches.
President Joe Biden, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell have all committed to fortifying security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
