The Canadian government has announced the indefinite suspension of arms exports to Israel, as confirmed by the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. This decision comes as part of Canada's commitment to maintaining a strict export permit regime.
According to a statement from the office, Canada is known to have one of the most rigorous export permit systems globally. The statement clarified that there are currently no active permits for the export of lethal goods to Israel.
The government has taken steps to ensure transparency regarding past export permits. Export permits that were approved between October 7th and January 8th have been shared with the parliamentary committee overseeing this matter. Since January 8th, no new arms export permits to Israel have been approved, and this suspension will remain in place until full compliance with the export regime is guaranteed.
It is important to note that export permits that were granted before January 8th are still valid and in effect, as per the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
