Canada study trap: Businessman cheated of Rs 11 lakh in Ahmedabad

AHMEDABAD: Navrangpura police registered a case of cheating and breach of trust against one Deepak Rupani of Om Education who had promised to send the complainant’s son to Canada for higher studies but failed to even get the visa.

Suresh Patel, a businessman who stays in Vastral, in his complaint stated that his son Milan wanted to go abroad for higher studies after completing his bio-medical engineering from LD Engineering College. Patel contacted Rupani in 2017 at his office on Ashram Road.

Rupani advised Milan to go to Canada for higher studies and assured that he would arrange for his admission in a college. Rupani charged Rs 20,000 as consultation fee and gave an estimate of Rs 18 lakh for the admission. After a couple of days, Rupani called and stated that the admission of his son was booked in a college in Canada and around Rs 18 lakh was to be paid. He informed the complainant that if he failed to make the payment, the admission would not be confirmed.

The complainant was later informed that the admission would be confirmed by September.

Later, Rupani showed a screenshot of the admission and demanded the money. The complainant paid Rs 17.32 lakh for the admission. However, after repeated inquiries Rupani failed to get the admission of his son done and even failed to procure an air tickets for Milan.

In December 2017, Milan got admission in the US through another agency. At that time, Rupani returned Rs 6.32 lakh and promised to return the remaining amount in instalments. Rupani paid only one instalment and failed to give the remaining Rs 10.70 lakh. The complainant on Tuesday lodged a complaint with Navrangpura police.
