Can travel be eco and economical? Listen to the Standard podcast

Greener getaways and impact-led escapes don’t need to cost more – as you’ll discover in the latest episode of our new, weekly sustainable travel podcast series.

This week, eco-travel expert Juliet Kinsman and Jon Weeks are in the studio for another uplifting conversation about what it means to gallivant without guilt — reminding us that holidays can be eco-friendly and also economical, provided you follow some simple advice.

Listeners will learn how to leave less in their wake and the importance of thinking about who their money goes to in-destination. They may also be surprised to hear how staying at a big hotel that’s at full capacity might actually result in a smaller carbon footprint per guest than that created in a smaller property. It’s all to do with automatic in-room sensors that turn off energy-draining mod cons such as air conditioning, in case you’re interested?

Award-winning writer and broadcaster Phoebe Smith also joins Jon to share tips for great value sustainable travel. The host of the Wander Woman Podcast shares tips on how our travel money can stretch further in some destinations and recommends low-impact accommodation ideas for cities, countryside, and coastal forays, which won’t cost the earth but will ensure memories that last a lifetime.

If you like what you hear, then we’d urge you to read Phoebe’s companion article for more smart suggestions on what to pack, addresses to avoid, and an explanation of why choosing some food and drink options are more responsible.

Next Saturday, The Standard: Sustainable Travel podcast will be examining how to choose a more sustainable destination.
